Mr. E. M. Chettle, who has been appointed by the Bank of Australasia to an inspectorship in Australia, expects to leave Hawera for the Commonwealth this week. Mr. Chettle is at present on holiday leave. Mr. Hair, accountant,' is in charge of the Hawera branch until Mr. Kimbell (Mr. Chettle's successor) arrives from New Plymouth. Mr. EonaynS (general manager of the railways), Mr. Beattie (chief mechanical engineer), and Mr. Buxton (chief traffic manager) left for the south last night on an official visit of inspection, which is expected to last nine or ten days. ■ Colonel Collins, 1.5.0., assumed his new duties as Controller and 'AuditorGeneral yesterday. '■ The following Wangan.ui people will be passengers by the P. and 0. Mongolia; which leaves Auckland on Wednesday next for London Misses Humphreys (2), Messrs. L. Cohen,. W. Duncan, and Todd. , , - On Friday night 6ome of the members of the Farmers Club, entertained Mr. W. G. Taylor, veterinary surgeon, of Masterton, who is leaving . for Hawke's Bay, at a social gathering. A number of eulogistic speeches were made, the farmers present expressing their appreciation of Mr. Taylor's services to the district Mr. E. P. Fenton, late of the New Plymouth Technical and District High Schools, has been offered and has accepted the position of art master at the Masterton Technical School. Mr. G. B. Dall, inspector of post offices, returned from Auckland on Sunday. On Saturday afternoon Mr. Peter Georgeson, who has been in the employ of the "Evening Post" since 1881, and is now, and has been for many years, in charge.of the front commercial office, was presented by • the • general staff <with a massive oak sideboard, iti view. of his approaching marriage with Miss Mouat O'Brien,' of Utiku. Mr." Gresley Lukin made the presentation in appropriate terms, to which Mr. Georgeson suitably replied. The proprietors presented' Mr. Georgeson with a cheque. Herr 0. V. Stetten, of Munich, who has. been visiting Wellington, left for the south last- evening to do the Otira Gorge and Cold'Lalies tourist'trips. Fellow underwriters made a presentation to Mr. Frank Ashbolt yesterday in view of his retirement on account of illhealth from the position of chief clerk in the local office of the Australian Alliance Assurance Company. The function took place in - the Underwriters' Rooms, Mr. : T. W. Pilcher (Atlas Company) occupying the ohair, and being supported by. Mr. H. M. Lyon (secretary to the Underwriters' Association). Speeches were, made by Mr. Hawke (Commercial Union Company), and Mr. A. E. Kernot (Australian Alliance Company). Mr. Ashbolt'was presented with a handsome travelling bag, and hopes were expressed that . his visit to Tasmania. would result in the complete restoration of _ his health. Our Napier correspondent states that Mr. W. C. Kensington, Under-Secretary for Lands, accompanied by the. Misses Kensington, left* Napier for Taupo and Waiotapu by the coach yesterday morn- , ing. ; As a token , of respect" for the memory of the late Mr. S. E. Johnson, who was the first Mayor of Petone, his, portrait in the Borough Council chamber was hung with crape-prior'to-last night's council meeting. The clerk was instructed to. convey to the widow' ' and family an expression of tho council's sympathy with them in their loss. : Mr. Harold Ashton, of the managerial staff of Mr. J. C. Williamson, is to have charge of the "Peter Pan" Company, which is to commence a tour of New Zealand in Wellington on Easter Saturday (March 26). ...
