The.council 'of , the Manawatu Cricket Association met last evening, anil madu final arrangements for the match with the Australians on Wednesday and Thurs-' day noxt. The visitors have consented to allow the local men to bat thirteen men, and field eleven. It was resolved to ask Mr. I). Buick,' M.P., the Mayor, and '■Messrs. S. Greer and H. Palmer to receive ..the Australian team on their arrival here. The game will commence at 2.30 on Wednesday afternoon, ami at 11 on Thursday. A match between Pakiatua and Manawatu will be played at l'almerston on Saturday, March 26. . ! The Palmerston sports yround wears a verj lively appearance every evening at present The cricketers'are assiduous in their practice, in view of the Australian and other matches, and' work at the nets is almost constant. In addition to the cricketers there are a host of athletes and cyclists, busy training for the Caledonian gatheriug, which is to be held here on Easter Monday. This is the ffeat attraction for the district during faster, and running men, ,and cyclists irom all over the Dominion generally find their way here to compete. The competition in the Scottish event s is always very keen, ..and visitors to the sports can depend on a great day's outing. The Palmerston High School pupils held their annual swimming sports yesterday afternoon.- The following were the results:—soyds. championship: L. Pegden 1, L. Butler 2; time, 33sec. 25yds. race (unuer 15): K. Dowdall 1, W. Coombes and W. Barber tied for second place 25yds. open race: A. M'Donald 1, C. Lord 2. 100 yds. open race: C. Low 1, D. M'Rac 2. M'Donald € ' At a meeting of the General Committee of the Palmerston Brass Band tho president, Mr. W. Park,' in the ihair, a draft of the proposed new rules was read and delegated to a sub-committee, who are to' go through it ■ and submit their finding to a general meeting at a later date. ■ Considerable, interest is now being taken in the band, there being a general feeling that the town should have a good band. A number of residents have donated good medals, to be awarded as folios-Mr £ N Clausen, for best soloist; Mr. H. Palmer, for junior player making greatest progress in next six months; Jfaior Dunk, for bandsman turning out. shiartest at all paradesMr. A. E. Clausoa, for competition to bo arranged by bandsmen; Mr. J. Mounsoy, for host attendance and moat improvement bohveon April 1, and end of tho current yoar. For this latter competition Mr. Kendall gives a silver medal as second prize. An alarm was sounded on the fire-bell at eight o'clock last night, a fire having broken out in the promises occupied bv Mr. Burnard in.tho.Square.
