The Niwaru had just arrived in Great Britain after an adventurous voy-age-Home from New Zealand.- She commenced her voyage towards tho end of November with a full loading of wool, and with instructions to make a fast passago Homo on the 60th parallel south, to catch tho wool, sales. All went well until 1140 west was reached, and then she got in among drifting ice,: and' had to bD slowed down for fear of-breakin-, her. propeller. For three days she did- uot 6ight water, tho sea being covered, to,the horizon with ice floes, among' which' numerous icebergs, somo of thorn 400 feet high; floated. Seals and penguins were on the ice in great numbors, and it stood between two and throe feet. out of the water. Luckily, in that southern latitude it was daylight (being summer) over the whole 24 hours, and tho officers of the vessel were able to see what they were doing. Nevertheless, they Bpent a very anxious time, and Captain Hollis, was much relieved when he left the ice behind without damajw *- Vi vessel.
