NOTES ON THE RACING. ■ IBy Telegraph-Special Correspondent.) . Wanganui, March 5. In tho Autumn. Handicap the betting foreshadowed a good race, as the whole of tno runners were quoted at good prices. ■When the start was made all, except Perolina, wero on tho move. She gave the others a -'big start. ' Ambrosian led at a fast, pace till the turn, where Lady Meuschikcm and Chauvclin came out. The finish between this pair was close, and the ' Soult colt, who looked much improved for his first day's gallop, won by half a length. Truo Shot was favoured at the barrier in tho Matarawa Hack Handicap, and was never headed. Down the back Emblem was her nearest attendant, but none of tho candidates was able to get near enough to extend tho Australian-bred iilly, whose , easy victory proves her to be in a class above. any. of the other hacks competing at the meeting. Toanga, who. was tho medium of a big plunge, finished second—well clear '• of" tne remainder. Mulga Bill was fourth, and Itistori, after hanging out badly all the way, finished nearly last. Brilliancy was backed by his party, but did not justify the support. "Armlet never looked better" was the opinion .of those who scrutinised the southern champion before tho start'of the Jackson Stakes./ The Menschikolf mare's recent winning form under big weights, 'combined with tho fact that her trainer, Mason, has-been so eminently successful in turning out winners.of weight-for-age and classic events, resulted in her being sent. out.a big. favourite. E Hatch was in the saddle, and good'judges would not hear of Armlet being beaten. Formby, it was considered, might beat- her over live furlongs, but would be unable to even extend ier.over six. The mare won, but it was anything but the easy victory that backers expected. Formby, 1 who waa second favourite, was first out, and led from Broadsword and 'Armlet. The positions were unchanged till the home, turn had been rounded, and hero it looked.' as if Formby irould come in alono, but, once in a line, for the post, Hatch called on the favourite, arid, in a close finish, she. won by a head. Broadsword was only half a length away. Sunburnt and Lady Medallist were last. This is the third year in succession that Hatch has ridden the winner of tho race, and it is interesting s to noto that E. J. Mason has trained four winners of the event since it was instituted in 1902. The running in the. Fordell Hurdles proved that the public had gauged tho form wonderfully well. There were only.ten more tickets, on Waione than on Maggie Paul, and next choice was Xavier. The threo candidates finished in tho order . indicated by the betting. Pikopo made, the early; running from Mount Cook, and Golden Glow, .but the two favourites wero never out of range. Before the straight was reached, Pikopo had cried enough. . Maggie Paul and Waiono jumped the last fence together, and.the whips were out on both. The finish was exciting, but. in the last few yards,.Maggie Paul,..who is only a pony, began to -give way. under pressure, and Waione won by half a length. Xavier was close. ,up,; and .then came Hydrant and; Pikopo. ~-; ..-..- ; iTho Hack Hurdles also 'produced'"'-!!-fine'.finish, and again it was bistweeir the two most fancied-candidates/-First Barrel led by many , lengths'for. tM s first r half mile, bnt then Gold Bird gradually reduced the gap, and Maku also moved up. Mn. the last three i furlongs, Cairns crushed Gold. Bird to the.' front, and secured a break on Maku. Tie latter gave chase, and by an extraordinary jump at the last fence ho landed level with Gold Bird. He picked himself .up more quickly than his rival in the dash to the post, and won by a length. Tho Wanganui Stakes was productive of a sensational finish, in which four horses crossed the line together. Lady Lucy .was a very warm favourite, and next in public favour was Osiris. Lamsdorff led, at. a merry, paco ; for over'' a milo, when "Osiris' went to the front. Lowe, however, did not appear, to make, enough use of him, and allowed the others to join issue at the turn. Here Lady Lucy was especially fortunate, .as her rider, pushed her through on the rails. A splendid finish resulted in a head win for the favourite. Sandstreain, who finished very. fast on the outside, ■was placed fourth. So close , was the finish that many people were confident that Sandstream had won. More excitement prevailed on the lawn when the order was given to pay out. One bookmaker, who had taken-a liberty with the favourito, was unabloto meet liabilities, and, after backers had recovered some of their money, the, police escorted tho defaulter away. It is understood that one backer, whose money was riot returned, will on Monday morning lay a charge.against tho bookmaker.■..'
. The withdrawal , of. King's Prize in the Harrison Hack Handicap placed backers' in a quandary,' and some trouble was experienced in finding a favourite. Beacon made-the "'early, running, followed by Bismark and. Marathon. At the bend the field closed" up, and, in the finish, John and Bismark left the field. John won by half a length after a hard finish. North East was made a very hot favourite', in the concluding event, and he won after an interesting race. He got away first, and, with St. Bill, led.down the back just ahead of Ballarat. At the straight entrance St. Bill and Ballarat dropped" backed, and Lady Menechikoif and Overtime both challenged. They were, however, unable to mako any impression on North Fiast, whose victory was a most attractive one. ... ■
