WaioMi has ' been raised . 141b. for his win .on Thursday, and to-day meets ilaggie_ Paul on much worse terms than when the Hawera mare defeated, him last month at New Plymouth. Maku got .badly chopped, out at the seven-furlong post .in Thursday's hurdle race, but, in the small .field all tho candidates should get clear runs. A. Oliver will rids Lady Lucy' in the Wanganui Stakes to-day, so it may reaBoimbly be assumed that the Cup winner Milan will not bo a starter. King s Prize, who had such an easy vic«ry on Thursday, should be greatly benek;Jjr *5° w*' a ? SOl "<what on ■-tho big side before leaving Awapuni. Til® .Persimmon mare p<. ro l illa . was not started- at the Wanganui meeting ou Thursday, but she will probably bo given a run to-day m the.Autumn Handicap. Acceptances for the first day's events at tho Masterton Racing Club's meeting anil entries for tho Maiden Hack Raco will close on Thursday. March 10, 1910, at 9.30 p.m. Tho Sydney Cup is overtaking tho Melbourne Cup in tho matter of value. Whon tho first ,£IO,OOO Melbourne Cup was run in tho season of 1891-2 the Sydney Cup only had. .£ISOO attached to it, advancing tho following season to .£2OOO. After four ,£IO,OOO Melbourno. Cups had beon run tho added money for that raco dropped to ,£3OOO, but in. 1901 rose, to <£5000, at which it has since, remained. Tho Sydney Cup this year carries ,£3OOO, hut 1 next year it goes up to ,£4OOO, and several other stakes have been considerably increased' by the A. J.C.
Tho Masterton Racing Club has erected looseboxes oil its course at Opaki, and accommodation has also been provided for trainers and jockeys. To-day's contest for the' Jackson Stakes is the ninth and though there is no Achilles engaged, tho race is nevertheless surrounded with considerable interest. It is worthy of noto that in the first six contests for the event, a two-year-old was only once victorious, but for the past two seasons tho race has .fallen to a horse of this age. In this afternoon's contest a couple of brilliant 2-year-olds are engaged and their meeting with a high-class sprinter like Annlet, should result in a very exciting struggle. The starters 'will probably bo Armlet, who will bo ridden by It. Hatch, Polymorphous, who will have Oliver in tho saddle, Broadsword, who ran half a mile on the track in 48isec. yesterday, Truo Shot, who had a somewhat lucky victory in tho Juvenile Handicap on Thursday, Tribulation, who is hardly seasoned yet, Sunburnt, who will carry tho Stead colours and will be/ridden by L. /Wilson, and Formby, who has proved himself tho best 2-year-old in tho Dominion and who will be ridden by H. Gray. ' Ml RAM AR PONY RACES. The following are the fields engaged in the different events at- the Wellington Pony, and Galloway Racing, Club's meeting at Miramar this afternoon:— ORIENTAL HANDICAP.
