The Presbyterian Orphanage, at Brooklyn has only been opened- for a 'few months, but already there are nineteen children in it, aud many more, applications for admission than it will'be possible to grant, so that it has been decided to seek larger quarters, and the committee in charge of' tho "orphanage are looking for some .suitable place, with an idea that they may possibly have to build one. So far, the institution has been generously supported by the public, members of .other denominations as wyi as Presbyterians, for the home 'takes in children of any church, and it is not expected that there will be difficulty in. supporting a larger home. No subsidy is received from the Government, which thinks it has granted subsidies to homes enough. Mr. Mills, whose wife is matron of the orphanage, and who was for years associated with her in mission work-in Tory' Street, has been appointed the social agent of the Presbyterian Church in Wellington, which means that he will attend the:courts, with special attention to juvenile offenders, and will-visit various institutions in the capacity of chaplain for that,church. He is also secretary and collector for the orphanage. It is not intended that any juvenilo offenders who may come under. Mr. Mills's care should be taken into the orphanage, but they will be placed in suitable homes and looked after. Mr. Mills .leaves in a few days for Dunedin, where similar social work grow first out of a prison-gate mission and then out of .the establishment of an orphanage.
