WHOLESALE DISASTER IN STATE OF WASHINGTON. • TRAINS HURLED INTO CANTON: A TOWN ISOLATED. By Telegraph—Press Association—Oosyrizht. New York, March 3. In connection with the avalanche that swept the 6lope of the Cascade Mountain Everett, in Washington State, and buried two express trains under the snow, it transpires that the trains had been snowbound for seven days. The telegraph lines were destroyed for fifteen miles round. The avalanche, which was a mile long, devastated a portion of the town of Wellington, AYashington State. It hurled the two trains a distanco of 200 feet, and buried theih at the bottom of a canyon. Sixty persons are reported to havo perished. Several of the passengers saved themselves by sheltering in the hotel instead of remaining 011 the train. An escaped passenger brought the first news to Snohomish. Nurses and doctors were sent by train from Everett, but were unable to get within fifteen miles of Wellington, which is covered deep in snow. DEAD OR MISSING, 84. WOULD TAKE WEEKS TO DIG TRAINS OUT. (Bee. "March 4, 9.55 p.m.) New York, MarcH 1. Three resouers who have arrived at Everett roport that tho dead or missing number 84. '■ There is little likelihood of further rescues, as the trains are buried under 40 feet of snow, rook, and debris. Weeks would be required to dig them out.
