"SAINTS OF PAGANISM."
—— —t —-—, DR. GIBB MAKES AN IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT. Dr. Gilray, Professor nf English.at the Utago University, delivered a lecture, in ht. Johns Schoolroom last, evening, on rT nts of Paganism." The Rev. UT. Gibb, who presided, introduced Dr. bitray as a teacher, revered as much for his personal qualities as for his erudition and teaching gifts. The. lecturer took bocrates, Epictetus, and Jfarcns Aurclius as., tho chief representatives of tie saints oi paganism. In a most interesting fashion, he sketched the careers and characters of Socrates, " Epictetus (the philosopher, who was a slave), and Marcus Aurelms (who as emperor had best- adorned the- Imperial purple): In conclusion," Dr. Gilray, in a few wellchosen sentences, pointed out the impressions that could be gained and the lessons drawn from the-study of the great men of a pagan past.-; • .•Professor' Mackenzie; moved a vote of thanks.to the lecturer for' his interesting' and instructive address; winch was earned with .-acclamation.- A collection was then taken up in aid of the funds of the Presbyterian Orphanage. ;.-ll an " o,l , nci ')S tho result, the Rev. Dr.Gibb .stated that the orphanage Was now fiilU.-and tho, necessity of getting a larger house had. arisen. He hoped thev would soon.be.able to get a larger house, or, what wasljetter still, erect a new one. this, would-entail the nrjpointment of a male agent 'to superintend the urgent work of- looking after the boys and girls. It was a work which.in Dunedin had' been well done-by Mr. Axelsen, whose labours there .had not only, earned the thanks of the Church, but the plaudits of the press and the praise . of ... the public. There was a similar ■ agency in Christchurch, and an excellent opportunity existed in Wellington for. undertaking the work here. A-much larger sum of money would.be required than was at present the case, but: the response had been so good that', there /was ho ■ fear of a lack 'of funds. .They, had begun in faith without funds, and had always shown a credit balance—not a large one, but still a credit—and: there was no reason to fear that they would not be able to do so in the future. Dr. Gibb announced that it had been, decided-to'appoint 'Mr. Mills, husband 'of the present matron of the ' orphanage; Social Service Agent.for the enlarged scheme of social activity.
