Mr. Coombes got the field away splendidly. Sedition was the first to show out,, followed by Osiris, Outlander, Diabolo,. Milan, and Lady Lucy. In the run home, a fine race resulted in a win. for North East by half a length, Boaner.ges a similar distance away.third. Time, lniin: 14 l-ssec.
NOTES ON' THE'RACING. ■By Telegraph— Special CbrresDondont.l , Wanganui, March 3. For the opening event Swimming Belt was made favourite. He jumped pit first, but Was soon steadied, and .Mendip, vich Ambrosiar.; took "up the running'. Down the back the favourite was third, and at the homo turn Mendip was galloping so freely, in. front that' victory seemed assured for. him. However, he collapsed, in a few strides, and Swimming' Belt came on and won easily. Lad} .Menschikoif, who got a bad rnn in the first few furlongs, finished well, but had no chance with the winner. Chauvolin was last in the early part of the race, but ho finished well, and was on terms with the winner in the straight, but faded away again.
For tho Hack Race the Hawera-ovmed Emblem was selected . as, the best, and she finished up at a vory short price. With Idolatress she led in the early stages, aud Strathmoira and Toanga were next. The favourite was being ridden ttiree furlongs from home, and could not go the pace set by the Wanganui mare, who came oil.alone from .the home turn; Strathmoira beat the others rather comfortably with Toanga a poor' third. ,
The Porirua horse Waiono was backed heavily in tho Westmere Hurdles, and he led from end to end. The pace was very slow in'tho first mile,-»and no one seemed to trouble about reducing the lead of the Waiuku gelding. First Barrel was his nearest attendant fpr the first mile, but then'Xavicr, under a pull; dropped into second place. With six : furlongs to go, Mount Cook challenged, and ho was with the favourite for a couple of furlongs, when ho dropped back beaten. Xnyier then, camo again, but Waione was never troubled, and iron easily..
In the Hack Hurdles tho public were unable to judge which was the better— Maggie Paul or Maku, tho pair dividing the betting. The Auckland horse First Barrel made the pace very sctroug for a mile, when Kauroa took the lead.- Then ■ Maku' and Maggie Paul, who had been in the rear, put in their claims, and this pair, with Kauroa and Gold Bird, were all handy at the last fence. The weights then told on the favourites, and they fell back. Gold Bird' had no difficulty in winning from Maku, with Anemone, who came fast, third.
• Iho- way was then cleared- for the Cup, and the parado attracted considerable attention. Diabolo looked tho best-conditioned mount and no fault could be found with Lady Medallist or Milan, the latter stripping "J better condition than previously. Lady Medallist or Outlander were not given preliminaries, but the others all went .down tho. straight at-a>good : pace;*:i'£ady: Lucy and Milan in particular moved freely After: a little dela? the field moved off to a good; start, and, with a 'furlong gone,: Sedition 'was in - front'' of Lady Medallist, Osiris, and Diabolo, .with Lamsdorfl acting as vfhipper-in. The order was the same entering the straight and- passing the stand,- but, at the six furlongs,-several candidates moved up, and the pace was clapped on. With half a mile to go. Lady Medallist was just in front of,Diabolo and Sedition, with Milan next, 'ihe last-named was in command at the homo turn, where Lady Medallist compounded. Lady Lucy then came round on -the outsido and momentarily looked dangerous, but Young suddenly pulled her up, and, when she walked in, it was seen that her saddle had slipped round. Milan won by, fully three lengths, with Osiris just ahead of Diabolo. Uhlando was # fourth, and Roosevelt fifth, while Waitapu was tho last to pass the. judge.
Polymorphous was supnosed to be a good investment in the Juvenile Handicap, but a. bad start -spoilt his chances. True Shot got off when galloping at top pace, and the raco was.quickly over, for the Pistol filly made every post a winner, and won by several lengths. Tribulation, was a bad third. The owner of Polymorphous was unlucky in meeting True Shot, as, at the Spring. meeting in September, this filly got a flying start, and beat the Highdon representative ; Celaeno.
Nothing but King's Prize was inquired for in the Wiritoa Hack Handicap, and the public were well advised, for Mr. Wilson's horse, on whom Jenkins had the mount, won very r .easily. ■ The favourite and Beacon were first away, and the latter led till the half-mile, where King's Prize joined issue. At tha two furlong post John fan up to King's Prize, and Beacon felt back. The favourite came away at the turn, and won by.a couple of lengths.' Bismarck was a poor third.-'
In the Flying Handicap there was a long delay at' the barrier. Parula repeatedly, broke through tho tapes, and twice ..got rid. of her rider. Wueiv uie barrier went up the field was in a good line, To Koti and Gold Crest being the. first to single themselves out. Boanerges soon ran into second place, and Gold Crest went back. At the quarter-mile post I'd Koti still led, but Tumut, Parula, North East, and Boanerges were all in' a winning position. Just before tho home turn was negotiated, Tumut ran into tho lead and looked a winner, but Jenkins rode North East very hard, and, in a great finish, got up.in time to win by a head. There was great cheering at the finish, and • it was renewed when the winner returned to scale. There will be a meeting of stewards at. 11 a.m. on Saturday, to consider a complaint against a jockey of using improper language at tho barrier prior to the start of the last race.
