In connection with the attempted murder of a correspondence clerk, Louis Niffin, at the office of Sasson and Son; Leadenhall Street, it is said that the assailant Elazar, who. is supposed to bo a Turk, shot his brother (Louis Niffin, alias Elazar) because he considered the brother's wife was a disgrace to the family. STRANDING OF THE MORESBY. Brisbane, March 3. At'. an inquiry regarding the stranding in Cook Passage of Burns, Philp, and Company's- Island steamer Moresby (which was subsequently refloated), the captain attributed an error of nine miles in the vessel's course to the current setting south-west instead of east, as expected. SENTENCE ON PRISONER WHO SHOi HIMSELF. Sydney, March 3. Davids, who 'attempted suicide in the dock after being convicted of theft, was sentenced to five years' penal servitude. Amongst other things obtained by fraud was the pistol with which he attempted suicide. [Davids, against whom there were several convictions, including some in New Zealand, was ( tried at the quarter sessions, Sydney! on a chnrge of stealing. When the jury returned with a veidict of guilty, ho exclaimed: "I am innocent. I (lie an innocent man." With that ho drew a revolver and shot himself in the side.
