A 'NAPIER DISPUTE; A dispute between tho Hawkq's Bay Master Tailors' Union and the Wellington Tailoresses' aud Pressors' Union (JNapier branch) has been referred to tne Conciliation Council. The Conciliation Commissioner (Mr. P. Hally) has arranged to. hear the dispute at the Napier Courthouse .on March 18. Messrs. Arthur H. Lya,. tailor, of Hastings, and Mr. AVbert Iredenctetm, tailor, of Napier, have been recommended as the employers' assessors on the council to hear tno dispute. . ■ . Tho principal demands drawn up. by tho employers.are as follow:— :•■■■■ Tho "log" shall be incorporated in, and shall form part' of, tho award. Any employer inay employ workers at weekly wages. " .. ' Journeywomen employed at weekly wages shall be classifieds as follow:—(a) Second-class coat and vest and trousers hands: A second-class coat hand^or••• a second-class vest" and trousers hand shall be ono who has served her apprenticeship, (b) First-class coat hands and vest and trousers hands: A first-class coat or first-class vest and trousers hand shall be rated as such by agreement between herself and her employer, (c) First-class machinists: A first-class machinist shall be ono working for an average of thirteen workers, or if for a less number, one.who can fill up her spare time in making a garment, (d) Second-class' machinists: .Sccorid-class machinists shall include all those .who do. not come within, the definition of a first-class machinist. . ..-.- •
The hours of-work-shall,be thosepro-; vided .for female employees in the Factories Act, 1008. : Tho following -shall , bo tho lowest rates of wages ''paid to, workers .employed at ..weekly wages. (a)' ;First-'. class coat hands and ,'first-class: vesli, and trousers hands, itbe" sura of .£1 10s. for each and every week, (h) Second-class coat hands,-'tho sum of ■ j!l 7s. 6d. for each and every week, (c) Second-class vest and trousers hands, the sum- of <£1,:55..f0r each-' and ': every 'week: (d) , ?'ai'J'r>wlass .'machinists'.shall, be paidat the rate of ;E1 ■ 10s. class machinists shall bo paid at the-rate of £1 ss. for each and every week. All overtime work out.of the ordinary business hoars of tho establishment shall be paid for, in tho case of work performed on weekly wages; at the rate of , time and a quartor, and, in the enso of piecework, at piecework prices with 25 per cent, added thereto. Provided :that if any worker shall through her own fault work during the ordinary business hours less than forty-five hours in any ono week, she must first make up the hours of forty-five before, she shall bo' paid overtime rates,for any .work - performed ill that week. , Each; week shall;stand, alpn.c-.
The' period' of service 1 of.- apprentice's, shall he as follows:—To coat-making, four years; and. to '.vest and .trouser making, , three- years. Indentures shall not be re-" quired'. The rates of payment for all ; ap- : prentices shall be • as" follow -.—For.; the first six , months, 5s.■ per ,week; for the second six months, Bs. per week;.for the. first six months of the second year, 11s. per week; for the second six months of' the second year, 14s. per week; for the first six months of the third year, 17s. per week; for the second six months of the third year, 20s. per week. For np-. prentices to coat-making, for the first six months of the fourth year, 255. per, week; for tho second six months of the fourth year 2Cs. per week. There shall be no distribution of work on what'is known as the "team system." The weekly hands shall havo charge of the apprentices, and shnll have no other permanoht assistance.
