National Geographical Society of the United States received with acclamation, and referred to its Finance and Research Committee, a proposal by Commander Peary on behalf "of tho Peary Arctic Club, for.' an ' Antarctic expedition. - The Club offers to contribute the steamship Roosevelt (used by Peary on his last two expeditions) on condition that the Society grants 50,000 dollars (,£10,000) towards the cost of the expedition, and that both, the institutions share , the balance'of; the expenses. '• ; Commander Peary suggested that the expedition might reach the . coast of . the Antarctic Continent in March, 1911, a(; a point directly opposite Captain -Scott's, base. Commander Peary stated that he would be-unable to conduct the expedition personally because the sledge work would require so much physical exertion that it would need a younger man.(By the words "tho opposite side" it is evidently me\nt that the American expedition will start fnan the opposite (or Atlantic) side of the Antarctic Continent ti the Paoifio side chosen by Shackleton and Scott.] -;.
