FLOWER SHOW.

ST. THOMAS'S, NEWTOWN. 'Each year for eleven/years past, n floweri show has been held at Newtown in connection with St. Thomas's Parish, a show in which a special. feature has always been made of children's .work, and which has a' housewifely, class for bakery and perserves. After the heavy rainsof the past few-days, : and the few hours of sunshine, it seemed almost impossible . that any flowers would. be left to show, but considering the weather the display was a very good one, though it did not reach last year's high level; The show was. opened, by Mrs.; Newman, who was introduced by the Eev. J. Walker; Among all the exhibits,. the most noteworthy were Mr. :Jackson's varied display of gladioli, the exquisite: roses shown .by Mr. Barber, and the fine cactus dahlias sent by Mr A. Smith and Mr. Burton., Mrs. Salmon had a . good exhibit of very handsome pot plants, and some most attractive-looking vegetables occupied a ehelf along one side of the hall. ; An _ exhibit that attracted much curious attention was the wonderberry, an extraordinary production of Mr. Luther Burbanks, who describes it as, being a plant of the greatest economic value. It is said to be .the. hybrid of two poisonous weeds,- and it still looks very much like a weed: itself, with its boneless stems, which . arecovered ,with tiny green' berries.the size, of large blackcurrants'. .The plant flowers and fruits at thesame time, and bears fruit prolifically during' the whole'of' the 'warm months .Miss Murray aoted -as judge of the floral- designs, and ;Messrs. Barber and Broad of the flowers and vegetables. Mrs. Hollis was in charge' of the tea-room, hnd: three ladies, Mesdames. Lee,' ! . Croll, and Shepherd, presided. over- the decorated stall. for. the sale of pot ; Slants. In the evening musical, selections 'were rendered by an orchestra. The show-, will be open to-day.
