At the Police Court to-day Fred; Dunn was brought up on a. charge of obtaining ,£155 from Joseph PoweU at - Pahiatua under false pretences. He.was remanded to' Pahiatna,' ; bail being allowed, himself in ,£2OO, and two sureties of £100 each..' Alexander M'Conkey oharged -G. Spiro with assaulting him on.Rongotea Road on January 11. 'The case.was dismissed with costs, 335. Two men, named , Thomas : O'Brien and Thomas Stokes, were charged with using bad language. The-first-named, who has a long list of previous convictions, was sentenced to ■ a month's imprisonment', Stokes received 14 days' hard labour; '■■ -.•■.
Various Sunday schools held their annual picnics* to-day; beautiful weather prevailing. The . Presbyterian , . Sunday School held theirs; at, Kairnnga in ; ,the fine grounds of; Mr, J. BalsiUie. A special tram conveyed between five and six hundred Methodist' scholars, and friends to Ashhurst Domain, and a large number of Cottgregationalists to the Manawatu Gorge. .Members' of, the Baptist Church went out into tho country, while the Salvation Army hold their, putiig on the old racecourse. ; ''.'; ...■;■
A- cricket match between, a Palmerston team and Mr. J. C. Williamson's Opera Company was played to-day. Palmerston went in first and made 252. The Opera eleven, ui their first innings, made 28,-; second innings, 54 for five wickets.
