WELLINGTON CENTRE'S,TOURNAMENT. A GOOD DAY'S PLAY. .. ' Fortunate indeed > were : those. wise men of, the :, oommuriity; who. elected ;. to ( begin the Now Year with a' good game' of; bowls. This opportunity, was afforded by the,-Wellington . Bowling Centre's, second annual tournament, which -commenced on the city greens' on Saturday: ,Up till Friday evening there did. not seem too likely a possibility of any. play, the next day, but - the r rain :; i arid., gale were much too fiorce to list; . and' thoroughly- spent thornsslves' in: plenty-of ; time for the greens to dry up. The holiday. dawned brilliantly, a. soft northerly' breeze ..having followed in ' the trairi rol ■' the . boisterous' gale, making the conditions'for ;play, well nigh, perfect. > Cinder :theso • benign influences-the spirits of. the;' bojylers, which had been considerably dampened by' Fridays copi-. ous downfaa:.of 'rain, , rose, and they ontered into! tho. play, with a zest that was really - inspiriting. 1 ; The greens were , a little' stiff from! the effects of tho ram to begin with, but as they-dried the "drawing"-' became ..better, and.not nearly .the "push" was required in. the . afternoon, as • was tho case.' in- the morning. The wind,- too, rose'after luncheon, and, as : it -gusts,; the bowlers found fine' play rather difficult, but the: wind took off a little , during the last round, when the -. playing: conditions were excel!<3 Sixty rinks in all competed, and play •took. place-.oni;the WeUinrioni;.Thonidon, •Vibtorid,' Newfctfwn; and; Kelbnrne • Clubs , greens,' "whilst'S the:.competitors 'also, included'rinks from-the ;.I^TOrviHutt,,P^ tone,' and :■ .the;.
