The Select Committee appointed by the Federal Senato to consider the press cablo Eervico, especially in relation to charges of monopoly niado against tho Press Association bj Senator Pearco, baa presented its roport to tho Senate. The report states that them is only one source of supply of cabled news for the Commonwealth and Now Zealand, nnd in that sense thoro is a complete monopoly. Tho service given to metropolitan papers is extensive, but much of it is uninteresting to Australian readers. The coniuntteo urges that the pro6ent position is undesirable and detrimental to tho public interests, becanse it makes it extremely .difficult, if not impossible, for new competing newspaper l ) to obtain a cable service at reasonable rates Tho roport recommends, (l),The-completion of tho All-Red cablo route. (2) Tho establishment of a Commonwealth nous agency at thq Australian High Commissioner's office in London. (3) The dissemination of nows thus collected among papers requiring it in Australia. (4) The establishment of a subsidised press cable association in Australia that will givo freo ontranco to all newspapers, with a uniform system of rates baaed on population and circulation. (5) Tho right to select news by country newspapers. (6) The right to use cable messages from , other: sources. (7) A copyright law for press messages.
