'All day last Saturday in the broiling sun <ind under tho evening lamps about a hundred women and girls, wearing whito sashes with black badges, stood in! the streets, holding col-lection-boxes and receiving contributions to- , wards tho work of tho St. John Ambulance As- , ebciation. Their efforts wore rewarded with good results, though, the sum collected tsas not . so largo as on previous occasions. It is satis- , factory to learn that the collectors were treated by the public with almost uniform courtesy and respect. In soveral largo offices, whore canvassing is generally'frowned upon, they wero heartily welcomed, and their boxes were made perceptibly hoavior. Some owners of motor-cart placed them at , tho service of tho organisation to convey-col-lectors and cash to and from tho vaiious stations and tho headquarters at tho Town Hall. A new,feature this year was tho use of littlo badges which were given by the collectors to those who put a shilling into the boxes. Tho I wearer of a badge was guaranteed security from further appeals. This scheme seems to havo worked well. " For the third j-ear in succession, Mrs. Cornpan and her band of helpers, who patrolled tho footway in Lambtou Quay from Woodward - Street to Carroll's Corner, topped tho list. They collected i>76 'Is.ljd, Mrs- Sievn ri»ht and her staff , overran the Post Office square and tho wharves. ■ Mid brought in £11 13?. t,\. From Liimbton Station to Molesworth Street, Mrs W. B. Fisher end her coadjutors netted .£37 19a. ,3d. At tho Albert Hotfel corner a dauntlops band, headed by Mrs. Pearson, garnered .£23 75., 7d. "Another corps, nnder the command of Mrs. F. M. B. Fisher, harvested £15 3e. sd. Nt Winder's Comer. A. whose interest in nursing and ambulance work is! well' Known,' wns at headquarters for Vrernl hours, rendering assistance ,and eneournginc the workers Mr. J. D.' Avery, secistary of the Wtfllinqton Centre of tho St. John Ambulance Association, shared the burden of the execntivo work with.a strong committee. Tho City Council granted the See'of the largo room next tho Mercer Street entrance of the Town Hall, and allowed tho "cash to bo, lodged in the oity treasurer's safe ', , at the end of the day.
