THE WELLINGTON ASSOCIATION. ■ PWNKET SHIELD, MATCHES. ■ -A. meeting of the Management Committee.of the Wellington Cricket Association''was . held last evening, Mr. M. Luckie in the chair. . ■ A circular from the Wellington Umpires* Association ; stated that' five years, ago after' much ..hard work on the part of [i loiY enthusiasts, the association liad teen brought into existence, but during the last three years'the .membership had: decreased. . It was! now diffi-. .cult to find sufficient umpires 'to} control the . senior games. The committee decided (with . a view-to. assisting) that members of tlic Umpires Association officiating ,at .championship matches should be granted the' privilcgo of honorary members of the association for the-cur-rent. year. .One of the privileges was that they should receive, free passes for championship and other matches. . "The" Championship Committee reported in regard to the preparing of wickets on the Basin Reserve for school matches on Fridays that they considered it would.be unwise to encroach on the groundsmen's time. They recommended that the parties interested should make their ..own arrangements with tie groundsmen. This suggestion was approved bv the- Management Committee, who consented to undertake the marking of the wickets. The Championship Committee reported on the state of the nets used at the Basin Reserve. It was decided to issue a warning to clubs that unless all the requirements of the association were carried out the forfeiture of privileges would be enforced. . Application was made by the Victoria ColLege Cricket Club for a practice wicket on the Basin Reserve.—Referred to the Ground Committee.for consideration. The neglect of scorers at last Saturday's senior match, Wellington South v. Wellington East B, in not recording the bowling averages was referred to as "a scandalous proceeding." The-committee expressed the opinion that the matter was one for the clubs, who should find no difficulty in appointing competent scorers. The New Zealand Cricket (iouncil advised that the dates for the - Plunket Shield match, Wellington v. Auckland—December 27, 28, 29, and 30—had been confirmed. The Canterbury Association had notified that, should Wellington, win the' shield, the Canterbury Association desired . that the usual interprovincial match against ; the Wellington Association, to be playeid on January 1, 3, and 4, 1910, should be a Plunket Shield match. The chairman considered that it would be rather hard on Wellington players (if tliey won the. Auckland match) to have to defend the shield two days after winning it. There was another point,, whether Canterbury had any right .to, challenge Wellington before they had won. the shield. However, members remarked that it was quite possible for the challenge to be made by telegram as soon as the AnrHnn/i match was "decided, and it would be just as well for Wellington to "take their gruel," and make no objections. Committeemen expressed the opinion, that it was not desirable to, take an umpire with the team to , Anckland. 1 The Selection Committee were recommended, to have the team for , the Auckland match selected as far as possible : a fortnight before the date of the fixture; and players were advised to leave Wei-, lingtoc not later than midday on Friday, Decomber -24, preferably on'the Thursday night. \, It. ,was reported, that a.profit of 13s. had •been realised through the serving of afternoon tea at the Basiii Reserve last . The Y.M.C.A. Club wrote complaining of the state of No. 2 wicket at Newtown Park. It was stated that the wicket had never been rolled or watered, jnd was not safe to play on. Soveral. players had been more or less seriously hurt by balls rising off the rough pitch. • The players were complaining about' paying ground fees, ijnd'the club urged that no charge should , be made, or that a reduction should be granted until the'wickets were properly, prepared. An instruction was issued to the Championship Committee tHat all preparations should be made in future. A resolution was carried that;dubs should' be notified that, unless subscription arrears (due on November, 1). were paid by next Saturday, steps would be taken to enforce the rules. The delegates of Karori District Club asked that the Association should give some help to the club regarding ground fees.. On the understanding that their action was not to be taken as a precedent, the committee decided that, if Karori entered a team in. the championships (probably third-class), the association would pay the, difference between; the ground rent («£G) charged by the Ivarori Borough Council, and the amount credited to the club in respect of ground fee;. .
