PAHIATUA.
Yesterday. St. Matthew's Cricket Club (Mas-, terton) ■ journeyed to Mangatainoka, findsuffered dofeat by 23 runs. The wicket was fast, and the weather fine, but> threatening. Mangatainoka batted first, and put up 59, Crawford (22) and It. Williams (13) being top scorers. In their scr-ond innings l 'they compiled 81), I'earcey (29), Cos'tofe;i6), Crawford (13), and Williams (12) reaching double/ figures. St. Matthew's' made a good stand in their first ■innings. , scoring 86,-Wilkie (20), Mascelles (1G), Kingrlon (10), and Fielding (!)) batting well. Their second innings, however, proved disastrous, ';. only 29: runs being made. • Mascelles bowled well for the, visitors, taking' thirteen wickets for 28 runs. For the local team Pearcey, eight wickets for 26 runs, and R, Williams,' nine for 41, were the most successful trund-lors.-.The visitors were entertained at dinner and.tea by the Mangatainoka team. !:The; Pahiatua bowling green was officially opened, yesterday by Mr. (J. .A. , Burgess (president),' who, in the course' of a short speech, stated that he believed that the green was equal:to:any in the North Island. He hoped to see the club represented at. the North Island tournament at Wellington in January next, and he also greeted ■ the visitors from the Terrace End ■ Club heartily, aud thanked the ladies for supplying an abundant afternoon tea.. • ' Games were then played between tho president's and vice-president's ' teams. .-Members of the Church of Christ held a picnic at Manawatu Gorge yesterday, and several private- picnic parties from Pahiatua journeyed there also.
