ENTERTAINMENTS.

OPERA SOUSE. "The final performance of "The Great Worid of London" was given at the Opera House last ■evening- by the 'Anderson' Dramatic Company. The house literally.revelled in'the sensation, which fell thick' and fast. The company will produce to-night, for the first time, in, New Zealand, Walter' Melville's great.Drury Lane success, "The Female Swindler." This is a play of the detective species, very similar,to "Sherlock/Holmes," only that instead of Moriarty 'we have Lu Valroy.(M.iss.May Granville) as the villain, who is- eventually run to earth, by a ."Criminal Investigator" from Scotland Yard, /with whom she falls in love, aid he is in love with her.. Comedy : plays no small part in the interpretation of the drama, and exciting scenes and incidents, coupled with . Mr. Reg; Robin's scenic. displays, help to .make, this .one of the best.productions which Mr. Anderson'has presented to the Wellington public. : ~','■' .THEATRE ROYAL. . ' ', : A holiday'audience gathered : at the Theatre Royal last evening, and appeared to thoroughly enjoy the fare provided.,. The well-selected .list'-, of pictures brought .forth liberal applause.. "The-■' Boyhood of' the Famous- Detective Vidocq," "The' Foundling;" 'and "Beauty.. Spots of the Riviera" were, the, best of.the-screenings.

. '■ ' '""• THE'"' ROYAL" PICTURES. ;■ ■■' ■'•;' His. Majesty's! Theatre was again, well 'patronised last evening, when the current week's programme was shown- for the last time: '• The syndicate promise ouo of the finest programmes which' it'- has yet presented to. its patrons at to-night's performance. Special mention must be' made. of "By- the King's Command," a pathe art drama-;.by; M. Carro, beautifully, coloured. ' "The Horseshoe" (coloured), "With Her Card," "The Indian Runner's Romance," and another of the "Nick ■ Carter" , series,.jentitlecl- "The .Sleeping',-,Pjlls.": Somoyery Brie'', scenic and -industrial-;!films will be shown, included in which are "Delhi," "In a Mica Mine" (I'athe iFreres colour kihomatography). The comics, "Oh, Uncle," "Tinned Three- Friends, , ' "The •Unlucky Picnic," go to complete this' evening's programme. ] ,; I- , .-: .'., , ■'■' . ROYAL PICTURES ATI.TOWN. HALL. . The big Town Hall was crowded to the doorb last evening to witness a progr'mme.exhibited by the management of- the .-'oyal' Pictures. Only on Monday afternoon 77. Newman said jokingly, in laying-'tho found-.tion. stone of the new King's Theatre, that ho;' thought that-the council would soon havo to'.enlarge the Town Hall. It, was not such" an extravagant remark after all, if one. judges by the throng iwhich rose to the lure of the kinematograph' lKst even-, mg. Thepietures were of a highly entertaining order, comedy and tragedy being discreetly interspersed with, scenic views. Of the latter class, "Niagara Falls Under Snow/', and ..Peasant Life in Egypt" were full.of interest Other pictures shown were: "The Abduction," . Tribulations.', of, a Nephew," "A, Woman's Way," "The Legend' of Narcissus," • "How they made a ,roan of Billy Brown" (a'Sequel w 'An Englishman's Home"), "India of Today, and "Where is My Wandering Boy Tonight? ■ •. . ...": V ; ,, : . star'pictuees; ';. . '•■'-.• The Star Pictures Company gave two per-" formahces yesterday, both of which were well attended. The new excellent one—was repeated to tue evident appreciationof thtse present. "Winter Sports in Canada" was. probably the pick of, a fine selection. Other films shown we're:—"A Life for a Locket," "The;. Wand of the -Devil," "The Policeman's Dreams."- The programme will be repeated to-night. ... . .■:..' ~ .•-..■' '

■'■;.,■ WONDERLAND., 7.," The many attractions of Wonderland, Miramar, are being-fully appreciated by the publio if yesterday's attendance ,is.any criterion. As a picnic.resort,' the grounds are exceptionally situated for picnic parties and those desirous of enjoying a day's outing, and the offer of the company to make, special terms to parties was availed of.to a large extent. The grounds w;ere protected to some extent from the persistent northerly wind, ,and perhaps this fact influenced: those in search of a quiet outing. Be that as it may, -Wonderland was largely patronised for the holiday. yesterday, and' it seems to have achieved a permanent place in popular favour as a desirable pleasure resort. The various side-shows, such-.'as the waterchute, toboggan, fernery, katzenjammer castle, helter-skelter,, etc., received every_ support,-the ohildren being prominent. - '. LECTUEE BY ME. MAUGHAN BAENETT. It is scarcely too much' to say' that what Mr. Maughan Barnett does not know about the "king of. instruments"—the organ-—is not knowledge. He will deliver a free lecture, under .the auspices of the City Council and Library, Committee, , in the Concert Hall, tonight,, on "The Organ—its Mechanism'and its Music." This should be'oneof tho most interesting of the present series of "library lectures." , ': . ■ ' ' ME-' HOEACE-HUNrs EECITAL. The plan for Mr. Horace Hunt's recital will open this morning at the Dresden, where tickets may be obtained. The recital will be under the patronage and in the presence of her Excellency, Lady Plnnket, Lady Ward, his Wojship the -Mayor,-and. Mrs;' Newman. The artists assisting will be Mrs. D. C. Bates, Mr. John' Carter, and Mr. Stuart Maclean.. ■ BENEFIT SOCIAL. ....'■ \ . .;■ A benefit social at tho Druids' Hall last night enabled many holiday-makers to forget in the pleasures of the, dauco the. discomforts of a holiday in unpropitious weather. The effort originated among employees of the City Corporation, and appears to have been very well organised. ..... . ,'.,,. DANCE AT BROOKLYN. ■ ; In celebration of the holiday a public dance was given last night at Fullford's Hnll, Brooklyn, at which a number of pcoplo froni town as well as from Brooklyn'were-present.- Tho hall was gaily decorated with flags, rind'oxccllcnt music was supplied by Mr. J.
