The Hurdles were contested by all the accoptors. The Sold was bunched opposite the stand, where Slaney and Belanc fell. This left Waipunehu heading Xavier, but, atf the sixfurlong post, the former fell, aind Southern Cross joined Xavier, with Whatakura third. Southern Cross eventually won comfortably by several lengths Trnganiiu and Nautifonn woro the backed candidates in the Criterion Handicap. At the start Kilindini rushed out and led the whole way. Nauti. r orm challonged at tho distance, but his rider appeared to take mattors too leisurely, and Kilindmi gained tho verdict by a head. Ingoda was fourth, and thon came Bollin and Truganini. Full Sail, Mundie, and Wot Day were tho withdrawals in tho Hpsom High-Weight Handicap. With the exception of Nyland, who was shghtlj left, the field got away well together. Valdimar acted as pilot to the turn, whore Balaclava dre« up, and a good finish resulted in favour of the latter by a length. Porle d'Or was the wime distance away third, and Swimming Bolt was fourth. ' Contrary to expectations, tho Derby was an interesting race, and not by any means 'the one-horse race which most pcoplo prophesied. The rtazl -ma a. goad one aid, pawing Cntts's.

Needless to say, the favourites—Prince Foote, Alawa, and Traf the centre of attention, and'they seemed to be well aware, of what great responsibilities lay upon them, as they arched , their necks and playfully tugged at their bridlos -or- nipped at their attendants. It 'goes without saying that, they looked in the . pink of condition, their hard-run' raco afterwards showing that;thev did. not belie their appearance. ' Before tlie horses were taken to. the starting post-they were, paraded in- front of the grandstand, and a fine show they' made 'as they cantered or walked past. These preliminaries .over, up the course they went,'until they, were- almost out of ,sight. Then a period of snsporise.'.'Away in the'distance: could be'seen a' string, of horses. But without the' aid of, strong glasses it[-was impossible to.tell what was,;doing np'there in that highly-strung .mass.. , ; As one was.-won-dering whether they would ever start, a .note from; the-electric gong startled ■ tho ear,,.and down the course; came a .line,- of horses. .It was straight w at .first, then.it. grew '.-'ragged .fall: of.-.a sudden, .as something shot out, and the .word wont,up. that-Artillerio was in.front.
