DIRECT TRADE WITH BRISTOL.
(By Telegraph.—Special • j • Auckland, October 30. The president', of" tho Bristol Chopiber . ot Commerce, Mr. C. H. Bartlett . (ono of tho commerce delegates), has written to the local chamber with a view to opening up, now trade.. In tho course of his letter, he says: "For some time past I have been greatly impressed by the fact that shippers of produce from Australia and New Zealand would do well to seriously consider the advisability, bf cultivating and. encouraging a mora .direct trade with what have been called the 'outports o! England.' Tho tendency at present is to concentrate shipments on the London market, and while I do not undervalue tho advantages that market offers, its very at-tractiveness-has within it feature's which; seriously detract therefrom, and pravent the realisation of that full commercial valuo for colonial produce'which shippers have a right, to expect from' the natural lawJ of supply and demand..; Not the least disadyantago. is the constant risk of the market being'overstocked, resulting in serious depreciation in values and consequent fall in prices, while the cost of distribution beyond a limited arts increases pro rata this loss by reason of the fact that every, operation of 'handling, transport, carriage, and storage acts to. the . prejudice ■,of. the relief. My speeial reason for writing you is to enlist 'your interest on behalf of direct traffic with' the port of Bristol, and to; ask* if you'; will kindly favour, me at early convenient with the. names .of shippers of, any kind •of produce in your eity. or neighbourhood 60 that I may get into personal touch with them to! onr mutual interest. A population of ten millions of people can. with advantage ..be' served from"'Bristol as a distributing, cstitfo. Its now Royal Edward Dock has direct communication , with the main lines of railway; its equipment of wr.rehouses,. oold .storage,.'and up-to-date facilities for dealing expeditiously With traffic of all kinds beins; unrivalled."
