ENTERTAINED AT PALMERSTON. ; triom Our. Special Correspondent.)Palmerston North;.' October 19. Tho Chamber' of. 'Commerce 1 Relegates' •arrived/in Pahnerston by the first' express this morning. Mr. J. M. Johnston .(president of the Palmerston Chamber of Commerce)' and several members went down to Longburn,' and by the time the train had reached Palmerston,' had made themselves acquainted with thy members of the visiting' party. At the' Palmerston Station they were met by the Mayor and councillors and members of the Chamber of Commerce; No'.welcoming "ceremony took place here owing to the crowd and bustle, but the visitors were immediately driven off m- motor-cars in waiting, and taken to luncheon, at which Air. J. M. Johnston presided.'' The Hon. T: Mackenzie and Misses Mackenzie (2) accompanied the delegates. - - ■ At the luncheon, Mr. Johnston, on behalf of the.local Chamber;of .-Commerce, extended a hearty_ welcome to the visitors. He thought that visits 1 by commercial men from the Old Country would havo-a great effect in strength©ning the ties between them and.this country. It was proposed, he added, to take their guests through some of the surrounding • country, and : iit only needed that , ctimmercial men should 80. through a■ district.to tell what i:s possibilities were. The Mayor (Mr. J. A. Nash) also extended a .hearty, welcome. , J.' 1 -. About a" dozen motor-cars were, then placed at the disposal of the delegates and tho iadiea, members of the. Ihe commerce delegates, who came' -'-on to 1 Eeilding to-day,' appeared -to -beVsatisfiedUlut they had done wisely in. selecting- this portion of the island for their visit. They were much impressed; with the success of the small farm settlement plan as illustrated, by 'the district through which they motored!- The -visitors-' fifteen in-number, including three tored some 50 miles ,in 2J, hours,- -and before they entrained.on the Main-Trunk express Mr.Pattonson. on- -'behalf of - the party, made -.a Short-speech. He said that the settlement : of the district was really remarkable, for a period-of-30 years -'- "In another SO years," : he added, 'you will be as well settled as the Old Country." Mr F. Pirani spoke in reply. The.
