Halloy's comet was photographed last Thursday, at; Meanoe Observatory. :■ The; however, was'so extremely faint .that. its discovery was not made, public. This (Tuesday) morning,' another attempt was made, increasing the exposure from one and a-half to two and; a .half, hours... This • time- the comet- is clearly, .defined'-on: the' negative. Some -time will elapse .before, the'comet is visible through even- the, largest telescope.-.: The exposure this morning, began at a. quarter past one: o'clock, and ended at.- a quarter to-four,' "when the near- approachof dawn rendered further work impossible. '....•'•-.■ ../' NAPIER BATHS OPENED. ■' — '•■ Napier,- October 19. The Municipal Baths, built on the Marine Parade by :the Napier 'Borough Council: at a cost of between .£6OOO and .£7000,' were declared open this evening by the Mayor (Mr. J. Vigor Brown, M.P.), who appeared in his official robes for.the first time. The baths have seating accommodation for. 800 spectators, ■ but nearly 2000 people were admitted to-night, andi hundreds failed to obtain' admittance. The main'swimming bath is 100 feet long and 50 feet wide, and there are also other baths, and an . complete general equipment. Afterth> formal proceedings concluded there was a procession or swimmers, followed by a gymkhana. THE LICENSING WAR, . Masterton, October 19. ■Mr.'C. A Pownall, solicitor for defendant'in the recent-liquor case, where a fine of .£35 was imposed for keeping liquor for sale, states that he will probably test the point raised by him— that Masterton- is not a No-License district, as the result-of the recount was never published, and that,.consequently,, tho electors had no opportunity of objecting to any alleged irregulari-. ties within fourteen days, as provided by the Act. It is contended that the electors have still the right of objection if the result of the recount is published now, and if the. Licensing Committee ■ refuse to sit-he will apply-for .a mandamus compelling them to do so. . ' BOWLS. Dunedin, October 19. The- Council of the Mew Zealand BowlingAssociation decided to-night-, to institute annual. champion of champions competitions, one for rinks and the other for single-hand fourbowl players. Trophies are to : be provided for the players who are successful, and.'if the competitions show promise of hecoming a success, the'present council will recommend the incoming council to purchase a" fifteen-guinea .shield for /each -competition,, and the. 19094910 champions -will., have' their' names-,- inscribed thereon..-...-.- '■''~ '.
