(By Tclcgraph.-Spiciai Correspondent.) Palmerston N., October 19." Tho ordinary meeting of the High: Schooi Board of Governors was held last night, Mr. W. Rutherford presiding. A considerable amount of routine correspondence was, read from tho Education Department, with rei'erenco to grants, subsidies, capitation, and payments in connection with "the' Technical School and tho High School. .■ Mr. 0. Keischor, junior assistant master, tendered his resignation to date from January i; 1 and it was decided to Invite applications for a successor, the salary being fixed at £160 to commence with. Tho Wanganui Education Board wrote that it was proposed to appoint Miss Grant, who held first; class certificates in both hygicno : and cookery, as teacher and cookery for the southern' dis- : trick' The chairman > was authorised to : convey to Miss Fergus, tho late teacher-of'cookery, tho appreciation of the Board as to tho ■ extremely satisfactory manner in-which ; sho had carried' out'her duties. The .rector .reported' that there were' now ,149 pupils on the'.Toll. Several improvements wero required at the :High School, and it was resolved to have theso ■carried out during the Christmas, holidays. Mr. Hodder was appointed to act with the .'rector in drawing'up a report as to what was' required to properly furnish the gymnasium. The chairman and Mr. Wood were'appointed delegates to the Conference .of School Committees to discuss the question of Education Board boundaries, and report to tho Board of Governors. The report of the director of the Technical School showed tho weekly enrolments to bo as follow:—Art classes,, 95;. technical classes, 465: total, 560. It was proposed' to inaugurate an agricultural course for boys,and a domestic course• for girls,;and it'was reported that a profit of£2B'7s. had'been'made on the recent elocutionary and'musical competitions.. Mr. N. Malcolm has. donated a gold medal to tho Palmerston Fire Brigade to bo awarded to the best all-round fireman at the competition which is to ..be held beforo Christmas. ,' '■~ , ■ \ ..* , '. Good progress is being made with the rustic bridge over the connection between ,tho lakelets, in the square: Tho.'.work is,being. pushed on so as to have it" completed beforo show time. Tho curator and a staff of ;workmen are also busily engaged putting tho surrounding grounds, into'■order. ' . ~ ' ' .', The hon. secretary of tho Wellington branch of the' Navy League (Mr. C. W. Palmer) proposes to give a .lecture in Palmerston in November next, to be illustrated with lantern views. The league has decided .to givo prizes for tho best essays on Nelson's battles in con- ■ neotion with Trafalgar Day ,to the various schools in Palmerston. ''."■• '. Captain Hewilt, who is a prominent member of-the Manawatu Philosophical Society, has promised to contribute a paper on tho coming of Bailey's comet, which it is.anticipated will bo seen from the Palmerston Observatory. .' A largo number of visitors left Palmerston tc-day for, the Hawko's Bay Show. Among the number were Messrs, Elliott, ll'Crostie, Todd, Gardiner, .and Hall, all from the South Island. They are acting as judges at the show. So far as the entries have been made w'p, tho competition in the various classes for tho Manawatu exhibits will be exceptionally keen. In Lincoln sheep, for instance, the entries have more than doubled, while in nearly the whole of .the classes tho entries run from 20' to 30. ,In Komneys, which is. always, a; numerous division, there is also., a large' increase, while horses and. cattle show, corresponding increases. In the horse-jumping competitions, the;numbers are:—Hunters, ,45;.; maiden '■ hunters, 35j steeplechase, 35; gentlemen rider, 17; boy or girl riders, 24; lady riders, 30; hack classes, 20; driving, .25; best harness horse, 15., In dogs there are 450 entries, this being over 100 more than on any previous occasion, and in pigs there is also, .'a substantial increase. As stated some time' ago,- the entries in tho school, art, and.homo industries, which closed some days back, constitutej a record.
