• '. .'AUCKLAND'S PROGRESS. • • (Bj Teleernph—Boeclal Correspondent.! : ' . ' Auckland, October 13. ' "People can't get houses," said a.prominent Auckland land agent in reply to a query 'put b-7 a "Herald" representative. "There has been the case for some'time past, but the position is becoming tuoro.and moreiacuto. Dozens of people come into my office every day on the look-out for houses between five and six rooms, but they can't get them. One would have thought that the fact that 1000 houses were erected in the city a,ud suburbs last year would have relieved the ; situation, hut it is now becoming moro congested than ever, nnd many people I know of are being forced to put up in boarding-houses until they.can get other accommodation. From various sources of information, I am given to understand that the building activity here during the coming summer in the erection oi suitable villas will be very much greater than it was last year. As an indication of this I might mention that a tremendous amount of suburban land is being thrown on the market shortly, and that there is every prospect of. the greater, part, if not the whole, of ■it being taken up. Throughout all circles I find a general feeling of confidence in-the future of Auckland, ospecially when tho Native lauds are opened up. A great many people also attach a good deal of importance to the fact that Auckland is to be the headquarters of the British Navy in the Southern Pacific, and to the circumstances that the P. and O. boats are now to coino here. This shows that not.only Aucklandcrs are realising the. importance of the city- and port, but also that it is being more and inoro recognised in tho outsido world as well."
