THE OTAKI MAORI COLLEGE OPENING.
! Sir,—ln n. subleader of yoiif paper to-day regarding'; the opening' 'of the Maori'school at .Otaki, you say: "It is to be regretted that the Natives were not'consulted in connection with the Aceremony." Also, in tho report 'of Plunket's visit to the Maoris at the Town Hall •you Report: "Tfro Natives told him that mhen tho 'time' came for the ceretoony the Natives had not been consulted," Now' these Natives are not residents in Otaki, and, • therefore, I had not met them. To both of the above statements I give an tinqualifieddenial, as a laatter of fairness to the trustees. At the end of j'Ausust last, I met some of the principal Natives at Otaki; in the middle oi September/ I met them again! on Friday last I had another meeting with them. At tho first interview'! was accompanied. by two friends, both residents in Otaki,' one a retired Native interpreter, who can both testify to the correctness lof this statement.—l am, etc.,
J> KEBBEI/li. :Te'Rauawi>, Ohaii, October 5, 1809. Tit is apparent from Mr. Kobbell's statement that tho Natives were consulted. Possibly tho trouble arose out of disagreement as to tho form of tho arrangements for tho opening ceremony.] . •
