HUTT PARK AND RACING.
?, Sir,—Kindly allownip-to dratf attention to 'a matter which should not be allowed to paES without' energetic .protest. ■, The Hutt Park Committee has recently the use of the 'park '.to a city syndicate for raco meetings. : Ten meetings—nearly one a month—arc to be held (luting the year' at Xl 5 a.-day,; .with the 'option, of renewal for ■ another year. Now, 1. : .thinki it will be admitted generally that the unrestricted multiplication'of raco meetings is not for the good of ;the'Dominion, and should ibe -prohibited by the Legislature. .That some.tHing may ,be done by Parliament is my object, in'writine. Will' the M.P.'s take, this matter up?.' "Will the Premier" tako the matter:up, find'thus demonstrate that he is not. bound by the action of two of his confreres a while ago? -Purely.-in. the interests .of gain,, individuals, should ■■not be allowed to exploit tho vices of ,thb community. As to-the action, of the Hutt ■Park Committee, are they 'acting within their i rights? I know : their financial straits, but snrely the; small stira. required could 1)0 supplied by the local'bodies concerned! ,At least ;thcy should not, have dared to take such a step .before placing the alternative before the 'local bodies; and, moreover, ; no body-is justified in'getting'money at tho expense of morals. :-I:;am, etc., ~. . . T. A. WILLIAMS, i vPefcone, October : 6, 1909. i. I /. ..
