NOTES AND COMMENTS.
■ IB* GI.ENCOK.I '
With so many nominations received for the first of the spring meetings, ,it looks as if all the season's sprint events will draw good fields. The pick of the Dominion's horses generally oppose one another in the Stewards'-Handicap at Itiecarton, and'there is ample material for a good field this year with Gold Crest, Penates, Armlet, Bonny Flitaway, Nautiform, Xylophone, Broadsword, and others.
All Red was backed on Saturday by, a Christchurch party, that had probably laid a considerable amount and were reinsuring.- It is interesting to note that no matter how many races All Red wins between now and November, ho can.only incur a.pound penalty.- .Bobrikoff can only incur 31b. penalty, but any of tho other candidates can incur larger handicaps. ■ . '
The annual general meeting of members of tho Pahiatua Racing Club is to be held ou Tuesday, August 31. The report states that the position of the club: is satisfactory, and the prospects for the coming season are good. Tho receipts for the past year showed a slight decrease as'compared with the previous year, duevery largely to the general depression, but it is satisfactory to-note that the expenditure shows a decrease of .£3OO, compared with tho previous year, although the stakes were • increased, and a considerable sum was expended in In accordance with'the rules all the club's honorary officials retire, but aro-eligible for re-election.,.
The annual steeplechase meeting of the Wairarapa Hunt Club will' take place tomorrow. .'."'
Sir Frisco has been entered for the Avondale Cup, >to bo run next month.
Grenadier will run in flat races at the Avondale Jockey Club's meeting, and will afterwards be schooled over hurdles.
Of the - thirtv-four horses entered for the Trial Hurdles on the* first day of the Marton meeting, no fewer than twenty-three have-made tho first acceptance. •■■•■•.
Now that Tribulation has been scratched for tho Breeders' Plate and Gimcrack Stakes at Itandwick; it is not likely that any New Zealand two-year-olds will'bo competing, at,Raudwick. ■■■■".- '■'/.'.
Golden Eagle is again in work at New Plymouth, and will bo racing' at some of the spring meetings.
..Nominations for the Wanganui' Jockey Club's -meeting close on Monday next. It is stated that Bollin lias been backed for the New Zealand Cup. Sirrah, who is engaged at the Miramar Pony Races, has been doing good work recently on the beach at' Maranui. Mr. B. J: Watt's Wimmera and Muskerry have been entered for the Avondale Cup. Tho hurdle horse Ben Jonson also figures among the entrants for this event. , , ~ Mr. Geo. Paylihg, who died in Christchurch last week, was formerly president of the New Zealand • Trotting Conference, and did a lot to further the interests of. tho sport in the Dominion. He was in ill-health at,the last sitting of-the conference in Wellington,'but his death occurred more suddenly than was expected, r Tho Conqueror' gelding' Sam Weller met with a severe accident at the Waimate Hunt Club meeting last week, and it was thought .ho would have to be destroyed. His rider fractured his arm and several ribs. ' -' • ',' The AvondnlO'Jockey Club has,-received a poor response from owners for the steeplechase event at the spring meeting,. and none, of the ten; first-class credentials, y For soino? time past a movement has'been.on foot to establish a pony racing' club at Auckland, and the efforts of. thoso',interested aro now likely to : be attended with success. The principal item .with the club is the necessary ground to race upon, but it is now stated that an allotment of thirty acres is available within reas'onablo distance of the city.
King's Cross, who is engaged in the Melbourne Cup with Bst. 31b., competed, in that event last year, and ran sixth with 7st.llb. on his back. His party fully ..expected him to win that race, but he ran below expectations, though he won the principal handicaps on the second and third days of the meeting, .and established a new track' record for a mile and a half at Flemington. Ho is a half-brother to the last Victorian Derby winner, Alawa, and now that Peru has gone to India and Mooltan is retired, many of. the' Australian trainers consider him the best stayer in tho Commonwealth.
