Opening of a Now Sport. The members of the Garrison Officers' Club entertained a number of ladies in the Garrison Hall, on the occasion of a miniature i; rillo range, an'officers' and ladies''match being fired during the afternoon. Colonel Robin, in the course of a neat little speech, said that this little meeting seemed to him • a revival of the days of chivalry, when fair 2 ladies by their presence inspired their hus- ■ bands, brothers, fathers, and sweethearts to " deeds of prowess and daring, and he had no t doubt but'that the same result would follow c - in these days, given the same encouragex ment: Ho hoped shortly to see a Woman's i Rifle Club 'formed. Shooting ; then took f place; Miss Robins firing ■ the first shot for r the ladies, and making'a .bull's-eyo, amidst > much applause. Mrs. Matheson won • the > ladies' competition, making a possible thirtyfive; Miss Tumor came second with seventeen points; and Mrs. Rudman .third with eleven points. Mrs. . Mathoson's shooting won very much admiration from -those, pre- '.' sent, as. she showed herself perfectly .at horiie with the "deadly"'weapon. Afternoon tea'took place, when the shooting was ■ finished, in the Officers' Club rooms,' the table • being .charmingly arranged with spring p - flowers.. ";.-.- , . Afternoon Tea at Kclburne. : . Miss Kelly, of Kelbiirne, gave a.very.enjoyable'l "Linen ; Tea" for : Miss Flossie Nicholas on Saturday afternoon. The drawing-room .was decorated: with spring flowers, as> also was the' dining-room. ■ During the" afternoon a competition was held, answers!to questions being supplied from the names of. Shakespeare's plays: The winner,. Miss Mackay, was presented with a silver-topped pin Jar; and Miss Miller, 1 who ' was second, won a handsome vase. • Songs ■were given by Miss Grady and Mrs. Ivan Leyy; whilo Miss; Eames and Miss Mackey .played, and .Misjs^ieYwrMjt-^recit^d,-;:Miss-Kelly, wearing ; a'.wlijt-e jsiflc? dress/ received her guests, and'was'assisted by Misses B. and J. Mrs. De la Mare, and the 'Wellington' ladies' representative team which -'.'"'she 'is chaperoning,'"ire having a very enjoyable time, in Hastings. In addition to 'other festivities,' they were taken'for a drive- on Sunday afternoon by'the Huia Hockey Club. On 1 Tuesday there is to be.a social-in their honour, and,, on Wednesday,.'a:euchre ;piirty is to be given them by the Scinde Hockey Club, aaid a ballj- given' by the association,stakes place on Friday evening. Altogether thero is a very full weekbeforethem; The Wellington team have been, given,, the name of "canaries" on account of, their -yellow blouses. A very pleasant'little ceremony.took place on Saturday evening, when the crew or tho ,yacht Patronus;.made a presentation to Miss Amy Duncan, of Kilbirme, in recognition of the many little'.acts of kindness which she had-shown them, and also of tho very able manner in which she sailed the yacht in the ladies' ' race Last; March.
