—Tho'forinigliily mooting of tho City Council was held last evening. Thoro wero/present: ! ,Thb Mayor (Dr. 'Newman),, in tho ohair, Councillors Luke, Smith, Cohen, B.illinger, Frost, . Dovine, ■ Carmichacl, Shirtcliffe, iFlotcher,' Morrah, Atkinson, Hinclmarsh, I and Fitzgerald. . . FINANCE AND PROPERTY. ' ' Tho Firiancc Committee brought forward a report- from tho City Engineer as to tho' condition of , tho protective works at tho city endowment, near Pahiatua, where damage •was' done recently through the incursions of tho Mangatdinoka River. Tho engineer stattil that about three chains of tho work previously done had been damaged to such an extent as to requiro renewal, and also that it would -bo advisable 'to extend tho. protective works for an additional two chains' qeyohd the damaged portion. The estimated cost of tho work is £130, and, subject, to conflrinatiion by ,tho council, lie arranged. with Messrs. M'Mullon Bros., of Pahiatua, to carry. : out the work uudor tho direction of tho borough overseer for tho above amount. ■In- tho meajitime, they : are proceeding with th« : •,works.' most. urgently. necessary.- The City Engineer's, action was approved. : BATHS - AND RESERVES. , The Baths and Reserves Committee recom- v mended .that-tho proposal of Mr. E.,.
