THE TURF.
NOTES AND COMMENTS. rßr Gr.ENcoE.l The Grand National Hurdles will be run at .Riccarton this afternoon. Mountain King is training satisfactorily at Randwick, and on the tracks he shows plenty of pace. Nominations for all events at the Wairarapa Hunt Club's meeting close at 9 p.m. on Satarday-with the secretary, Mr. Norman H.'James, P.O. Box 145, Masterton. Jackpot and Nyland are being shipped home from Riccarton to-night. Nyland was not accepted for in any of to-day's events.
It is stated that C. Jenkins will'ride tho English fillv Wet Day in the hack race .today. Mr. Boyle's filly was (lying at the end of her race on Tuesday, but she got'out of the nick too late. .
Waikaraka galloped -very pleasingly over four furlongs at Riccarton yesterday morning,
Longner ran a very smart half-miJo at Riccarton yesterday morning, and there is no' doubt that the Trcntham horse is very well now. At the Wellington Racing-Club's meeting he was-not seen at his best owing to the heavy going, but at Riccarton the tracks are just to his liking.
Penates got a very bad run in the Winter Cup, and twice he was nearly down. Tho opinion, was expressed before that ''vent that he required a race to sharpen him up. Whether or not this opinion was correct will be proved before the meeting closes.
Eldorado, showed a lot of pace throughout the Grand. National Steeples, and should be improved by tho race. He is'engaged in' the Beaufort Steeples to-day, where the distance is much (shorter, than tie Grand National.
Lovcll has been paid up for in the Hunt Club Cup, despite his big burden, and be is to be given a chance... to repeat the performance of his half-brother Pilot, who last year won the Enfield Steeples and-the 1 Hunt Club Cup. As on Tuesday, he will be ridden by H.' Telford, and the Awapuui _ horseman can be relied on. to do full : justice to bis mount.
• The manner in which the Winter Cup winner, Nfcrth-East, romped .away from '-'a field in Tuesday's race will no doubt fi d him a large proportion of supporters: in the Islington Handicap, one milo, to be run this afternoon.- He-has been set to cajry list, lib. in this race, but when it. is understood that , ho had-his' Cup field in trouble from the entrauco to the straight,- ho may be ■expected to make light of his field.
Kelso was outjumping his. field in -the Trial Hurdles on Tuesday, when.be had the misfortune to oome to grief, and many held the opinion that had he stood up,: Auratus would have had a job to shako 1 him off at the finish. Kelso registered some brilliant performances on the flat, and as he is a good jumper, ho is likely to do well in hurdle races.
Consequent.upon their victories on Tuesday (telegraphs our Christclmrch correspondent), Compass and Auratus are now disputing favouritism with Tauira for the Grand National Hurdles, which promises to be a great betting race. Gold Dust has been responsible for some solid work since arriving at Riccarton. and J. Munn is very confident that the old fellow will be up. with the leading division at'the last fence. Ben Jonson, Scotty, and Ringman will all have'plenty of support.
Private watches made King Post run the last six furlongs of the Winter Cup nearly as fast as the winner. The .son of Seaton Delaval was the last of a strung-out field at; the end of the first furlong,, and the run h«. put in after that was astonishing. _ He is slow to find his feet at'the beginning of a race, but there is no mistake about his galloping ability. , . THE TWO CUPS. (By Telccraph.—Proes. Aasoclatlon.—Ooprrlclit.l- ---' Melbourno, August 11. Nothing of importance has dropped out of the two cups on the first'forfeits.
