Tho Ponsonby (Auckland) football team, today defeated the Newtown (Sydney) Club's representatives by 14 points to 6. Special interest was taken in the as it was regarded as deciding the club championship ;of Australasia. .. The weather was dull, with dropping rain, and the attendance was about 8000-. : : Newt-own were handicapped by the absence of two selected men', who met with slight accidents, during-the morning. Their places .were taken by less prominent players. Midway through the second half, Booth (Newtown) also was disabled, i some ribs being broken. . ■. - .Tho visitors showed to better advantage throughout tho oarlypart of the game. D. M'Gregor - (Ponsonby 'three-quarter), '■ taking advantage of a mull, scored a smart try. : • The visitors pressed heavily, showing some fine : scrum work. - A superb forward rush ended in J., Hair getting over for Ponsonby. O'Leary failed in both instances to convert. ' G. Murray, added a third try, and C, Webb missed the goal. , Nowtown's pnly score, in the first; half was .a penalty-goal, kicked by' Russell. At half-time: scores were:—• Ponsonby 9, Newtown 3. • '. In the second half Russell kicked a pen-alty-goal for Newtowm. From a cross-kick by G. Gillett,. M'Gregor scored, a good try, which O'Leary converted. , Ponsonby thus won by four tried, one converted, : to two penalty-goals. The -Ponsonby team were passengers by the Mokoia, which sailed, at; 6 p.m. for Auckland.. MAORIS BEAT QUEENSLAND.; HOSTILE DEMONSTRATION AT THE ' ; CLOSE. -' . (Rec. August 11, 11,55 p.m.) .. Brisbane, August 11. The.Maori footballers,(League rules) beat Queensland by 36 points to 25. .The visitors-found the Queensland men more than their match in .the first' half, wliich ended: Queensland 17, Maoris 12. The figures for the visitors were due to 'Asher, who played: a brilliant game, sowing four unconverted tries. : ■' v The second half was fast and furious. Kukhtsi, Haira, and Ratete obtained tries, in quick succession, Asher • converting the last two. Tuike added a fourth, and Ratete another, Taonui adding the extra points to the latter. Just -before no-time sounded, Asher orossed the line again, and the kick at goal failed. At tho close of the game several thousand people rushed the ground , and made a hostile demonstration against the visitors
