LEVIN NOTES.
A euchre tournament took place, in the Druids' Hall on Friday night between representatives •of the Hoi'ownenua Lodge of Druids and \Uv ■ Levin Fire Brigado, and resulted in a win for the Druids by 418 points to 411. The victors were hosts, and treated the firemen to supper; • A largo number of cases were heard at tho Magistrate's Court on Friday by Mr. A. D. Thomson,' S.M., the sitting being continued after darkness had set in. The most interesting case was one in which W. Bcvan, sen., of Manakau, sued J. G: Jamieson, of Levin, for' the sum of £85, the value of a trotting stallion, Young Torpedo, which was killed through coining into collision with a trap driven by defendant near''the Kuku Catholic Church. Defendant's trap carried no lights, but in evidence ho stated that he pulled .into. tho side of the road when he say Bovan's trap approaching. Ho also whistled) ond. a who was with him shouted'. After hearing evidence at length, tho , magistrate gave judgment for the amount claimed with. £8 ,13s. costs. .A number of local tradesmen wore charged with breaches of tho Factories Act, and also of awards. All tho defendants were convicted, and.various fines imposed. The' Boys' Department of the Y.M.C.A. met on Friday night, when tho result of tho essay competition was mado known. Tho subject was: "Tho Best Talk, and Why?" ■and Master Oliver Walton was awarded first prize. Four other essays wero judged of equal merit, and books were awarded to tho writers—Masters A. Gray, W. Bignall, G. Walton, and' E. Coppin. Judging by tho papers sent in,, tho subjects-most in favour were:—"Tho London Firo Brigade," which formed the subject of a "talk by Mr. J. Robertson, and that by Mr.. R. Prouso, on "Thoroughness." ' Tho Rev. T. F. Jones ''talked ,, - to the boys on Friday onanacros-. tie on tho word "cadet," and Master A. Gw pave a rcßrTimr. A team was selected to give a gymnastic display at the fancy fair,' to be held by the local fire brigade on August--18, 19, 20, and 21. ITT The representative football match, Hbrowhenua v Manawatu, despite the wretched ireather and tho, sloppy ground, drew a large crowd at Levin Recreation Ground on Saturday. The match ended in , favour of Horowhenua by 14 points to 9. ■•■'•■■
