NOTES FROM RICCARTON,
(By Telccrapb-Spcclnl Correspondent.) Chrlstoliuroh, August 8. To Arai juinpod faultlessly over tho big country on Saturday' Hβ is much improvcu since t-lio Trentliinn meeting, and promisee to start favourite in the steeplechase. Capitol Ims lightened up a lot since coming to Riccarton. Ringman, a prominent candidate for tho Hurdles, went better than Auratus on Saturday, and ho was carrying a stone moro than the .Wavorloy horse. Tho favourite, Tauira, has done everything his trainer has asked kiln to do sinco hia arrival r at kaad-
quarters, and ho is looking big and woll. Ben Jomsou's party are also very sanguirio about tihoir horso.'s .chftuco. Penates ran six furlongs this morning in lmin. 18Jsec.,- and North Kaetran soven furlongs in a tick over lmin. .30sec. Uoth were good gallops. l'oroite* is looltiiiß very big, but he has gono buck a triflo in the market since his arrival beeaUßO many good judges express the opinion Hint ho requires a race to sharpen him up. North East had Jenkins in the saddle this morning, and would be carrying his Cup weight. 110 has again assumed the position of favourite. Tho gallop recorded by Federal is cLill much discussed, but it-is held to l>o nothing bolter than those done by cercral olher candidates; as Mr. M'Farlane's horse was, carrying a feather-weight, only,, woro aluminium plates, and moved off at a flying start. Wnistlocraft has been ' galloping fairly woll, and on Saturday ran a mile on tho course proper in. lmin. 45sec. Nyland promisee to' Start a hot favourite in the hack race. When ho beat Waikoraka on, Saturday ho ran, live furlonge in lmin. ssee.,wliich is practically equal to North East's gallop. Husbandman and Taskmaster aro both looking woll, and are doing long, slow work.
