ALONG THE MAIN TRUNK LINE. Pnsengers by the through train which left lAuqkland for Wellington on Friday evening experienced a cheerless journey- When the taiift. reached Hqropjto thcio was a lot of snow qn the ground, and it wa3 piill snowing thickly. Heavy rain was encountered in the Ohalnine district. At Waionru snotf was again met, there being some inches on tno ground. When tlie trnjn. steamed in to Feilding snow in large flakes was descending. All tho, swampy land for miles below Loiigburn was flooded. In some places the water extended pa far as the o\e could seo on either sujo of the line. As Wellington came nearer the conditions were much more agreeable. SWOLLEN RISERS. WAIKATO RIVER IN FLOOD. • Auckland, Augu&t 7. After the exceptionally hoary thunderstorm of last night a high gale set in, and tho telegraph wires in tho country districts suffered considerably. The late rains have soaked the country, and'to-day tho Waikato River is in high flood. On the rqof of the island, the hieli plateau between the spiral on the Main Trunk and Waiouru, there has boon a fall of snow, and last night there waa a t ,dopth of .twelve inchei on, tho WaiotiruTokaaiu Road, High, angry' Seas are being experienced on the West , Coast. In various parts of tho ' listriot between here and Foxton there is still a large a,m,ount of water ljing. Dr. Findlay wtis unable to get' through from Folding to Foxton tp open the post office, and had to return to Wellington. The roa.d hae been rendered 'impassable by aland slip, and the Mangaone has ovorflowed its banks.' Snow fell jeaterday at Feilding and Apiti, and the Ruahines to-day arc covered with snow right down to 'tteir base. This, however, is rapidly thawing in the warm sunshine. THUNDER AND LIGHTNING. Foiidlng, August 7. The weather was- exceedingly rough last night. There was thunder and lightning and frequent heavy hailstorms; also a howling gale The livers and streams are flooded. There is moro rain to-day.
