October 2 and 9.—Wellington Pony anil Galloway R.C. NOTES AND COMMENTS. l fB? Gt.ENTng.l A Press Association telegram from Christchurch states that Ironwood has been scratched for all engagements at the Grand National Meeting. It is reported that It. Hatch will have tho mount on Mundic in tho Winter Cup next Tuesday. A half-brothrj, to Te Arai is owned in Gisborne. Ho is an untried horse by Sabretache. \ Thero nas a good deal of support forthcoming yesterday for Eurii3 for tho Grand National Steeplechase, and tho Euroclydon gelding had evidently impressed the tout? again in the morning.

Speciosa is a doubtful starter in tho Grand National Steeplechase. She has been causing her tiainer some trouble sinco tho Trentham Meeting. Waikaraka is wry well just now, and ho ought to run prominently at Riccarton before the meeting closes. Dawn has entered T. A. Williams's Stable in Auckland.' R. Lowis, the well-known Victorian jockey, has issued a writ against Mr. Maitlaud, tho V.A.T.C. handicapper, claiming £1000 damag6s for alleged' slander. At tho beginning of tho present week the Riccarton tracks wore in fine order, as there had been a good spell of dry weather there. If the weather .holds good till after the Grand National I Meeting, tho Canterbury Jockey Club will bo fortunate. Seotty was showing signs of distress after galloping ik round on the flat at Ricearton on Wednesday. But it is difficult to believp that much is wrong with the old horse's condition after tho two good races ho ran at Trentham. It is stated in Auckland that A. Julian will bo associated with tho Karamu stablo during the coming season, and it is even, hinted that he , may ride Kairoma at tho Meeting. It is understood, however, that tho services of J. Dolaliey have been retained to school any new jumpers at Karamu. T. Cahill. who has been riding on tho other sido during the past' season, has been granted a jodko.v'e license by tho Canterbury Jockey Clubhand will ride Ability in the hurdle races at,Riccarton.

The Canterbury Jockey Club has removed tho disqualification of the jockey, D. Price, as from August 1, and he has been granted a jockey's hesnso for the ensuing season.

When Eurus gavo his good jumping' display over the big country ,it Biccarton on Wednesday, ho was raced between Lo Beau and Irish, so that ihe would have no chance of running off. He was ridden by Nolan, but it is not stated definitely whether the English jockey is to rido Mr. Rutherford's horse in tho Gralid National.

As tho tracks at Awapuni have been very soft, Nyland was not able to do much fast work before leaving for Riccarton, so that the' of Finland may require a raco to sharpen'him up. It is interesting to note that Frolic, the dam of Te Arai, started only onco in a hurdle raco. This ,was about ton years ago in Gisborne. 'There was ..only one other starter in tho race, and Frolic made/ mat; tors' easy for.} him by-'.fal)inpc : i"at. tho .first, fence. To Arai has so far proved a very safe coiivoyanco;ovcr.-jump3, . How ho. will shapo over the big country at Riccarton has yet to ■bo seen. A largo number of good jumpers have come to grief there, but those who have .closoly .fotlowed the , career of Te Arai aver that he will nlake light of the obstacles. TRAINING AT RICOARTON. (By Tcleeraph-Press Association.) ' ChristcHurch, August 5. On the tracks at lliecilrton this morning Lady Disdain ran seven furlongs in lmin. 37 l-ssec. Whistleeraft beat Stratagem over nine furlongs. North East sprinted half a mile in 52scc. Longner easily boat All Guns over six furlongs, run in limn) 20sec. Grenadier galloped fteven furlongs in lmin. 32sec. Gwcndolina beat Sea' King over soven furlongs in lmin. 29' 4-ssec, St. Aidrui was beaten off. Ben Jonson beat Scotty and Snip over a mile and a quarter in 2muii ,18seo. Lion Heart jumped four hurdles in good style. To, Arai and Capitol galloped twice round together at a strong pac*. Nadador and Glengariff gave a pleasing display in a 'twice-rouud run over the bjg fences. Auratus and Compass jumped ak hurdles, tho former galloping Btrong6r ( but he fenced or- , , latically. Compass's exhibition of jumping left room for improvement. ' Stronghold has gone amiss, and will not fulfil his engagements at the coming mooting. ' -
