The, intercolonial steamers' spent two ,or three; days'' : in- Australia • at their terminal ports, whereas ir. New Zea-. land theso stcaniers, only, stay ono night at each port.- Therefore, in Australia a survey should bo carried out without interfering.with the vessel's running. The survey miglit not'bo completed, for .two or three trips,: but it was quite reasonable' to suppose that the chief engineer's that any particular portion of. tho', maohinery, was in order.would suffico until on the following trip the'inspector 'could satisfy ■ himself by personal inspection.::' Such a sys- , tcni'of -ir.sDection was impracticable—in-fact, impossible—in Now Zealand: ports;, where the stay barely exceeded twenty-four hours. ■ "..,' '■"' ",'-. _';. Mr. John Mill has sold the-old hulk Moa to Mr. Isbistcr, of Carey's Bay (says the "Otago Daily Times"). : Forty-five.years ago, this staunch old- craft was rigged ao a brig, and carried the mails more or less regularly between Auckland and Sydney, under the command: of .Captain Christian, and about the same time tho brig Thomas and Henry was the mail packet between Port Chalmers and Sydney , and it is worthy of-noto that both of Hhesc useful old vessels became the property of, Mr. Mill, and have lain side by side at Port Chalmers for many years—tho Moa having been used as a lighter and hulk for the past 20 years. Vessels of her type in those days were remarkable more for'strength than, elegance, and "old-timers", declare that she could go as fast sideways as endways in a head wind; consequently it iB not surprising-, to be'told that the old, brig, used to be hove-tb regularly when 6ho began to sail "sideways to leowafd." '. With the advent of steamers, the Moa and Thomas and Henry wore not' long hi' being; placed on /the retired 5 lißt, but-Captain Christian;is.still in harness, being now in command of the:Blaokball Coal, Company's collier Parcora, and : Captain Thomson, who commanded the Thonjas and Henry, is now living in retirement at Port Chalmers; In their early days the Thomas and Henry and Moa were, crack vessels of their type, and, filled a large sphere of-usefulness. Though now relegated to comparative obscurity, their bluff bowß andbulging sides afford a good basis lor comparing the old order with the new,, by m'eanß of which we. are afforded some idea of tho vast strides made in marine architecture during tho: past half century., ."'"■''-'!•;■ ARRIVAL OF THE : TONGAEIEO. After an uneventful voyage, tho New Zealand Shipping Company's R.M.B. Tongariro arrived in the stream at 9-o'clock yesterday morning from London, via" Teneriffe, Cape Town,; and Hobart. The Port Health Officer paid a visit to the vessel, and medical*, inspection being satisfactory, she was berthed at N0..:1 South, Queen's Wharf, Bhortly after 11 o'clock. ,- Tho Tongariro left Loudon on the evening of Juno 10, and Plymouth on JuneMS. Light to modoi rate variable winds with fine weather wcro ! experienced on the.run to Teneriffe, and moderate to fresh N.E. trade winds till tho Equator Was crossed on Juno 23. Fresh B.E. trade winds then set in, and continued till' Capo Town was reached on July 2. Passengers and mails weto embarked, ond the. vessel oontinued on to Hobart. For a couple of days after leaving Tablo Bay a moderate N.W. to S.W. gale with high seas were encountered, but from July 5 till •Hobart was reached on July 22 it was a fair weathor trip. At Hobart the Tongarirb discharged 400 tons of' general. cargo and then proceeded to Wellington.
