Constable Kelly, well-known, as a -capable momber of the police force in Palmerston, for tho past twelve months, has been transferred to Taihapo. To-day tho local members of the, foice presented "him with a handsome silver-mounted pipe, as a mark of goodtellowship and esteem. The adjudicator on school essays on the Potono woollen goods shown in Palmorston North during Industries Wook awarded the prizes to Laura Dalzicll (High School), and Jack Lynch (Lmtoii School). Friends of Mr. A. O. Beere will regret to hear of the death of his mother, which occurred at an early hour this morning. The deceased lady was tho wifo of tho , late Mr. George Beere, of Masterton,, and leaves a family of five —one son and four daughters. Tho latter aro: , Mrs. AVing, Mrs. Hotter, Mrs. Williams, and Mrs. Simmons, of Wellington. /
The Scottish and Skyo Terrier Club has offered a numbor of trophies for competition at tho Spring Show. These include a challenge shield (valued £15 155.) for the be3t Scottish terrior in' the show, to be won three times by tho samo exhibitor, but not necessarily in succession, before becoming his absolute property; a solid silver cup (valno £6 65.), for the best Sfcjo terrier in'-tho show, to >be won three times before becoming the absolute property of tho winner. A solid silver cup has been presented by Miss L. R. Fergusson (vice-president) for the best Scottish terrier puppy in the show, this trophy to be won threo tiinos, not necessarily in succession, beforo becoming the absolute property of the winner. Other trophies are; Solid silver cup (value £3,35.) for best novice Skye terrier, to be won twice, but not necessarily in succession; trophy (yaluo £1 Is.) i for best novice Scottish terrier. A silver medal has been presented by tho Countess of Aberdeen (patroness) tho best drop-eared Skye terrier. A fire this, afternoon destroyed a laundry at,,the rear of Mrs. Freeman's private hospital. Tho prompt action of tho brigade, howevor, saved the hospital, and pnvato residence.
At' tho Magistrate's Court this morning, Campbell Morryleos, liccnseo of tho .Family Hotel, was charged with permitting drunkenness, and also inciting and encouraging William Buckley to drink. Mr. A. D. Thomson, S.M., dismissed tho cases.
