H. ■ Russell and Mr.' F. Johnston-as to straying ■cattle.near' the.V.I.C., and at Alicetown. ''•A.formal reply, was received from the Norwich and London Accident Co."'concerning-. a slight accident to J. J. Burns. . -'•• ■ < ' ■ A letter was received from the Wellington , City Council as to extraordinary traffic on the roads, and also a letter from Messrs. J. Keir. and Co. acknowledging liability in the matter., The engineer was requested to report... -'■■, Letters were, received from the Public Health Department as to the local bodies' conference, relative to the infectious diseases "hospital maintenance, to;be held in Wellington on July 29. ■Eight ■ tenders were received for the supply of, cement to the borough-during the coming year!' Some discussion took place on the question of preference to local cement against Eng-; .lisa cement. The engineer stated'that English cement' was perhaps moro i reliable, than the local article, , but the chief thing, in its favour ; was that it was packed in casks, while the New Zealand brands of cement were packed An bags, which entailed considerable' waste," a' wholo bagful, being sometimes ruined by a shower of rain. For this Jattor Teason, it was decided-to use English cement, and the tender ;of Messrs. E..W. Mills and Co..at 10s. BJd. per cask, at the store or wharf, was accepted. : '.-'■ 1 The Town Clerk, in reply to the Mayor, said 'the bank was willing to allow the council the same overdraft as last year, namely, .£IO,OOO. Legally, the council was allowed to borrow an amount equal to one year's total income, which was between £12,000 and .£14,000. ■■ . ■ >
A special meeting was fixed for August 16 to levy, rates. , ', . .',-., . The Mayor mentioned that by law the council was empowered to assist such institutions as a gymnasium, and he thought that as the public were ■ subscribing towards; such a movement in Hutt the council might fittingly help, pernaps by providing a building on the Eecreation Ground. Football clubs had taken tho matter up, nnd he believed ifilOO was already subscribed. The matter, was left for councillors to think over. ' ■ ■ .
