The police, have decided to tako ecrioua action against those people who claim to-ft knowledge-of the occult, and who attempt to make money out of the alleged knowledge by tolling fortunes. 'fhis morning thoro appeared on the charge-sheet at tho I'olico Court five name* p.irporting to ho those of five persons claiming to be able to tel) fortunes. The first caso called was that againet W. Stephorson, charging him on two informations wrth having undertaken to tell fortunes. Defendant advertised himself as a clairvoyant, and on tho date in question two police constables went to his house. He took them into a room in somi-darknees, and thore pretended to go into a trance and to tell , their- fortunea. Also £2000, in' addition to £1650 already agreed to,-was asked for enlarging the present library buildings. Strong opposition was aroused to this latter over the question of site, and it was thrown out by 419 votes, to 171.
