Off tho Norfolk coast; the cargo steamer Eddystone, bound for Hull, ran among the submarines, colliding with Oil, whioh sank. Twelve of the crew,of Cll were drowned. Lieutenants > Brodio and , Watkina were rescued. Simultaneously Cl 6 and Cl 7 mutually collided, in endeavouring to avoid tho Eddystone. 017 was badly damaged, but is atill afloat. PREVIOUS MISHAPS TO SUBMARINE. The following are among previous mishaps that have occurred in the dangerous calling of the submarine sailor:— . In March, 1901, the British submarine Al was run down and sunk by a Bteamer ou tho Isle of Wight. All the crow drowned. On February 16, 1807, there was an explosion in Queenstown harbour on British, snbmarino A 5. Six lives lost. , On Juno 8, '1905, the .British [submarine A 8 foundered during manoeuvres oil Plymouth. Eleven lives lost. , In March, 1008, the French submarine Ventors, while manoeuvring at Cherbourg, suddenly plunged and struck a rook at a depth of ton fathoms. Her hull was extensively dam-1 azed and her propellers wore Tendered useless. I The coolness of tho captain and crew enabled | them to make a miraculous escape. t i In July, 1908, a leakage of gasolene in Bri- | tisb submarine AtMcaused by a spring controlling a valve failing to act-prostrated tho crew. Lieutenants Warren and Groves, noticing a eii'ell of petrol in the conning tower, wont bolow and found the men overpowered by fumes. Lieutenant Groves just managed to reaoli the engines and to turn off the suDply of petrol, thus stopping the engines. The Aeolus, the parent ship of the submarine flotilla, sent a rescue crew, who found the whole complement of A 9 lying about as if dead. Some of thorn wore unconscious for some time. No deaths resulted. . , . On June 11 last leakage cansed an explosion of petrol on board tho submarine AJ at Portsmouth. Lieutenant T. C. B. Harbottle, who was in command, and three othors were injured.
