AN HEROIC ACT.
The police are'often blamed for not being there when wanted, but this cannot be said of Constable Macphersot, who ' stopped, a runaway horse in JerVois Quay at 12.45 p.m. yesterday in an extremely, plucky manner,' and at-great personal risk. The horse >was attached to the express of James Mayhovr, of Pitarua Street, and'had taken fright through" fouling its own feed-bag when enjoying its midday, meal opposite .the premises of Mr. R. Victoria, Street. ■; As it galloped'down'tfl'at"t'norbughfare the horse managed to break and shake off its bridle. It veered round into .Jorvois Quay by E. W. ; Mills and Col's warehouse, where it came under the eye of Constable Macpherson, who, without limitation, dashed out, and, clinging to the horse's,neck while he ran with it as well as he was able, brought the runaway to a. opposite the Queen's Chambers. It is jnst as well that he did, for at that time a large crowd of people were leaving the wharf after having seen the Maori troupe off by the Manapouri, and serious trouble might have ensued Tiad the horse not been checked in its wild .career.
