-Tho Now Zealand Shipping Company s , steamer Whakatano, 5902 tons gross, bound for Auckland, collided with tho French cargo steamor Oiroo, 1258 tons gross', during a fog off Dungoness (a low shingly point forming the southern extremity of County Kent). Tho Circo struck tho Whakatano amidships, and tho Whakatano's engine-room was flooded.,. Tho Whakatano commonced to settle, hut was kept afloat with the assistance of tugs. Meanwhile tho Circe brought tho Whakatano's .passengers to Dover. These, along with tho mails and some valuable stud horses, will bo transferred to another of the Now Zealand Shipping Company's liners. Tho Whakatane was towed to Dover, and was beached on arriving there. She appeared to bo'badly down by tho stern. , ' Tho whole of the cW wero mustered in the forepart of the steamer, All the damage I is below tho water-lino. v
fThe Now Zealand Shipping Company's Whakatano was timed to leave London on July 4 for Auckland and Wellington; she was due at Auckland about August 28. Sho u a stoel screw steamer built in 1900 at Newcastle by Hawthorn, Leslie and Co.; tonnage, 8802 gross; length, 420ft.j beam, Mft.; depth, 28.7 ft. The stoel screw steamer Circe, 1258 tons gross, was built at Sunderland in 1903, and is, registered at Caen. Length, 230 ft.; beam. Sift.; depth. 15.7 ft.]
