ROSENEATH REQUIREMENTS.
DEPUTATION TO THE CITY COUNCIL.
. A deputation of Eoseneath ratepayers waited on the City Council last night, and urged that attention be given to; the roads, lighting, and water, supply, of. the district. '■'■■■ •■• . . i' ■ Mr.VH. Liardet, president of-'the local Eate: payqrV pointed oat that the water service in' district 'was extremely poor,'and a reservoir- -was -badly .needed. :: Frequently, after'B-a.m;, the. pressure;was- bo low, that it. was almost useless for even sanitary" purposes, to leavelfiro prevention out-of. the question altogether.. The population of the distriot had: increased largely,' and the deputation -felt'.justified in asking that the reservoir work be commenced.; He understood a resorvoir could be placed on Mount and serve tie district well, and the ratepayers were willing to beijeasonably rated ; for ; a:water supply. ■ -Referring'to the roading, : the speaker remarked" that the Hoseneath streets were very nruch. neglected.; Grass Street '.had/been 1 spoiled through -a contractor being allowed.jto shoot his, timber, down it 'and break 'up the surface of the 'street so much that'now it ivas dangerous to use it. Some of ■'' the . other streets > were not much better. The lighting was in a very bad state, the. globes, and,i mantles being ' very, much knocked .about and in need of repair. .:-■■'. llr.. T.-. W.; Ward impressed > the need for an improved water supply -on', the council' by stating that not long ago one-of the Eoseneth houses caiight firei' and , the owner \had simply to pick up his hat and walk" out and watch the house burn, as there was no water; .The Roseneath roads did, not appear to receive the same attention as roade in other enburbs'. TKe Mayor stated'that the council had ready dealt with the matter of lighting, having .decided to light the- suburbs (including Eoseneath) with electricity,. as soon ,ne, the contraot with the Gas' Company (which l only had a few months to -run); expired. The connoil was alive to \the position of the water supply,: and,, only two days ago, the Finance Committee had considered the matter of ways and means. It wassimply a matter, of money, and. it might bs'poiible to raise the money in a few months.. The'council would try; to ! start the water supply before : Christmas, if possible. The question of -roads -would ieceive attention;: ■■■■'■: . '.. ■ -.- ■ -■'■ . ■' •■v- . : -' : i..' •■.'.- -■
