WEDNESDAY RUGBY COMPETITION. Tho second round of the Wednesday Football Association's, competition was brought to a close at the Athletic Park yesterday afternoon,,in tho presence of a .fairly large number of spectators. The ground,was in perfect order, but, a. high wind swept tho playing area. Only one .of the two games set do»:n was; played, the Butchers being unable: to, plaice a team in the field to face tho Trim-' way combination, the result being that the latter team Won by default, • :
. . STAR V. ORIENTAL. ' . Vigorous forward play df a very mediocre Standard characterised the Star-Oriental match, <vhich created a good deal of interest owing to the tact that the Star team had Olily ;a' U>ad of twd ; championship points from their opponents. . At no stage' Was tho ■ game . scientific, main force being. the means of attack adopted by both sides. • The early part of tho game was in favour of the Star: forwards, but as the spell wore oft the Oriental vanguard livened uj> and pressed vigorously in . their - opponents' 2 natters during the latter part. The spell, atrevor, ended . without any score . being reCorded, notwithstanding the fact that, Oriental had no ■ fewer l than foar shots-at goal from fairly cloSe ranrt>,. ono of them, entrusted to Logle, being right in front of the pbsts,'and only .a few yards, from the goal line. ■ The Opening-of ths 64c<md half was in favour of Oriental, who had still another ineffectual Bh<st ftt' ffSftl ffOfli a penalty kick. ASSOCIATION. MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE. The Management Committee of the Wellington Football Association met last evening, Mr. H. N. Holmes presiding. A letter was received from the Swifts Club, withdrawing the senior second division team from the championship, and entering a junior second division team.—Approved. .Permission was granted for a friendly match to be played between Porirna A and Wanderers at Porirna, on Saturday next. , Some discussion arose in connection with the first of the Brown Shield challenge matches, 'l'aranaki v. Wellington, on July 10 next. It tfas decided that the match be played at Newtown Park, and that the City Council be approached with a request that permission be granted the association to take up a collection. ,A letter was received from H.M.S. Challenger's football team asking for a Saturday afternoon match.—Arrangements to bo made. The following team was selected to represent Wellington in tho match against Palmerston North on June 23:—
Goal, M'Lean (Ramblers); backs, Overend (Diamonds) and Jardine (Wanderers); halfbacks, Barrett (Diamonds), Cumroings and Birss (Thistle); forwards, Saunders (Swifts), Elliott (Mental Hospital), Phillips (Thistle), J. Reddy (Diamonds), and A. Loire (Diamonds). The chairman reported that, in company with the chairman of the Wellington Hockey Association (Mr. Organ) and the chairman of the Wellington Lacrosse . Association (Mr. Casey), he waited npon the Reserves Committee of the. City Council, and pointed ont that the frequent postponements of the games controlled by the three sports bodies, and played on the city reserves, were dislocating their, respective fixtures. Tho deputation was received in a friendly and conciliatory spirit. Mr. J. P. Lake, chairman of the Keserves Committee, pointed out that the mattor was, of course, one for the (UciSion of the permanent officials; but he would suggest fo the Officer in charge of tho reserves that postponement decisions bo deferred nnfil noon on the day Of play._

Paton, referee in the Newtown Park fifcturos on Saturday last, wrote ing that the Association ground Was not marked, and that during the progress of tho senior match, the players in a Rugby game on the adjoining ground ran across the Association ground. Ho' suggested that the matter be reported to'the Itugby Union.—Adopted/ Mr. B. L. Salmon, referee, teported that neither of the goal-keepers in the Diamonds r. Y.M.C.A. match at tho Basin Reserro were fn football costume, and so were not easily distinguishable _ from tho spectators. He also drew attention to the necessity for the provision of goal-nets, particularly in the Basin Reserve matches, which drew large crowds.' It was resolved that action be taken in regard to both questions raised in the letter. ■
' Irvine, of.; tho Wanderers' Club, attended to giva evidence in his own belinlf in connection with his application for a transfer to | the Swifts Club. Having heard his evidence, and having also dealt with allegations and counterallegations raised by the respective clubs, tho dommittee resolved, on ttid motion of Mr. Roberts, that tho application ha not granted. 'Mr. H. G. Mayer'was appointed-to manage the team which is to visit Palmerston- North on June 23. : The Diamonds' v. ■ -REFEREES' ASSOCIATION. , • A well-attended meeting of the Association football Referees' Association was: held last evening, Mr. \V. Auld presiding. Mr. B. h. Salmon tabled n motion to the effect that Mr. \Y. Woods, who resided at the Y.M.C.A., was, ' residence notwithstanding, Eligible to referes in matches wherein the Y.M.C.A. was represented. ■ Tho motion was Seconded. Cdrtsicterabls discussion took placo On the motion. and Mr. Woods expressed his Opinion that he could not referee id' any .match wliilo under a "ban." He was neither h lneniber erf the Y.M.C.A., nor of tho YiM.C.A. Club. .It,was explained that the motion cast no reflection upon the Appointment Committco. The motion was carried.
Mr. B. L. Sttlittoik wrote complaining that Y.M.C.Arhad verbally objected to his refereeing in the Diamonds-Y.M.C.A. match.' After explanation, It was decided to confirm thei action of the Appointment Committee in retaining'.ifr, Sainton. i It was agreed to hold a conference of referees for the purpose of thoroughly discussing the rules Of this game.
