' , s NOTES ON THE RACING, (fit ••IttttBATO—WECU&. COHRESrONDEST.) . , Hastings, Jurto IG, iTho Hack Stceploeliaso was wmtesltid by a good fiold,,and ,the; ceneral .opinion, was that-tit would bo a good race. Aroha, An* rarsgi, Sptoiflsa, and Lingoror all camo m far strong support. Arohn was first away, and lodfer halt n mile, when .lie catrto dflwii. At • the "first fortco of tlio doublo Aoranai ran off," &s'-.dicT: Afisft.y<;r' and To Kainui. There Were", lid .'.serious accidctits, ; Jno, O'Connell, Aroha's rider, was _. sevetely shaken. Speciosa gave a splendid exhibition of jumping, atid tvoli easily, .Sn6 vVan ridden by J. M'Griyor, who was making his first appearance iii a. cross-country * event sinco his serious accident at Felldmg two years 'Ago.El • Dorado, who finished second, is a fine big liorso by Gold ltrtf, and can both jump and gallop. Lingerer may have bp'i!; cter at the finish. But ho . dipped badly, on landing over the last fence. . a:;d Irish Rifio, both ridden by good .. riders,, Wore:'tho pUblio selections in tho Ladii .-i 1 liracelot, Irish llillo: ivas in front, ptillmj;- hand/-in the early stages, but ,I'iJciiKi, nicely handled by 1 ilr. G, Hirst, was .'ridden, in behind oh . tlio rails, at the -..finish, '-he had too much pace for Irish. Rifle arid .'wiukti, 7'i'iii' .Turainoo Hurdles provided a very intending finish, but .ComMsn would have bc : n very unlucky bad ho been beaten. He did not beuin well, and Cochrane ■ had to run over a lot of Ground with him, but ; at the.busiiiflM ond, he wnn a length in front of Corazon, who is more than useful. Rookby
gave a good account of himself in this race, and outjumped everything. He was slightly lame before going out. Nova was going well at the back Of tho course, when he broke a blood-vessol, and had to bo pulled
up. . Tho big Stc-oplcchaso proved a one-horse race, as .Gurus ran off at tho brush fenco, and this left Jackpot with a commanding lead, which tho other trio were unablo to reduce.- The winner jumped faultlessly, and Ill's- win was a very popular one, a« his owner is eno of the best-known sportsmen in the Hawke's Bay district. Nadador jumped well, and her rider cut off all tho corners, but she is not forward enough yet, and will benefit by the race. Capitol jumped badly, and his display was hard to understand. Nothing but Nero was asked for in tho Whakatu Hurdles, and tho local horso won comfortably from a largo field. North-east jumped away first in tho Scurry, and quickly put three lengths to his credit. Across tho bottom, Thetis ran up to him on sufferance, but, in the straight, Oliver gave the chestnut a reminder, and ho romped away again, and won very easily. Mundic, King's Prize, and Guiding Step were all better backed than the wiuner, tho opinion being held that his weight was pro* hibitive. -
The speculation in tho last race was very spirited, and Mahufcn and Poliufcu were each evenly backed, while, at a point' longer, plenty of support was accorded Waikaraka, who had tho services of Jenkins. Waikaraka was first away, and ldd throughout. The other places were filled by two horses out of tho same stable, loth being trained by'J. Sceafces, though they run in different ownerships. The' Trtfntliam-tramed Iranui was quietly fancied, but she got away badly, and was never prominent.
