ONSLOW ESTIMATES.

TEE RATE UNALTERED. , A spccial meeting of tho Onslow Borough Council was held last evening, at which tho estimates for the year were again Tie Mayor (Mr. J. 6. HarknessJ presided, and all the councillors wore present. It was stated that a deficit of about £441 was shown on the working of the past year, and, if operations were continued on the ohm scale, an mcreoao in the rate would bo necessary.

Councillor Stafford expressed tho opinion that the' council had not been justified in reducing the rates. „ Councillor Lymieberg remarked that the loan proposals had not boon carried last year, and ne was still, of the opinion that tho ™t/>s had been too low. Ho considered that it. would bo wise to set aside a fund every year to pay off the overdraft, on which they had to pay £GQ interest per annum. Tho Mayor said thataobody was more earnest than himself in the desire, to soe the rates reduoed, and, although it was impossible to say what extraordinary calls might bo made duT> ing tho year, he did not think tho rate should be increased. They had had to make provision for an inorease in tho hospital and charitable aid rates.

On Councillor Aplin's\ motion, the council decided to strike a general rate far 1900-10 of lid. in tho £ on the unimproved value of lands. Councillor Stafford staled that, according to the estimates, they wanted £1433 10s, but this rate would provide only £1463 153—£30 15a short.

Councillor Lynnebore held that the revenue would bo .£l5O 6hort it all the proposed works wero carried out. Principal among estimates approved wore tho following items.—Khandallah Ward-. Irani Koad, £52; culvert and extension at Page's, £40;' metal required for general maintenance, Ngaio Ward: Footpaths, Main Road to Stabon Eoad, £20; repairs to William Street, ,£3; repairs to, Old Porirua Road, JKO; metalling ■road near Mr. Bagle's, £35; purchase of right-.of-way, Ngaio station, £75; metalling for general maintenance, £50. Kaiwarra Ward: Footpaths, Porirua Eoad, £115; Pickering Streoc, asphalting and concrete channels, £35; improved foundation, Porirua Eoad, west ond, £6; improving School Road and filling behind concrete wall, £30.
