THE OFFICIAL ASSIGNEE.
Some time ago the Official Assignee (Mr. A. Simpson) became involved in a certain unpleasantness with the merchants', representatives who attended a bankruptcy meeting at his office, and complaint was subsequently made by thu Wellington Chamber of Commerce and Messrs. J.. Nathan and Co. and Levin and Co., Ltd., to the Miriistor for Justice (Hon. Dr. Findlay). Tho letters (previously published) contained allegations of discourtesy on the part of the Assignee. The Minister for Justice has since replied to the lottcrs, that received by .the Chamber of Commerce being road at tho ■meeting of tho Council of the Chamber yesterday. It stated, in effect, that investigation had shown that creditors were not habitually treated with discourtesy, although in the particular case under mention discourtesy had been shown. The Minister hinted that there would not be a recurrence of the trouble, and expressed the opinion that the matter might now be allowed to drop.
