This may be so in Wellington, but ia it so in country districts? Some years ago tho Wanganui society had to apply to- the Government ,to seo if they could not get a little assistance: from the police, more so in country districts. The result Was a reply from. the late Mr. Seddon, thon Premier, that .the police all over Now, Zealand had got.'instructions to prosecute wherever they found a-.case of. cruelty. -With what result havo those instructions been carried out. Even in small country districts, where to all appearunco they havo nothing to do, and whero cruelty is most glaring, I never knew , ono instance of tho police taking up a case—unless some one went and laid an information.: One sometimes wonders what they aro for--or what the Police Offences Act is for, if not carricd out. —I am, etc., COUNTRY LOON.
