CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.
Sir, —I notice that inspector Ellison, is reported to have said' that, tho polico prosecute in overy .case under their notice ot cruelty to animals, and that it . xvas abf solutely false of the Society for tbo Proven-:' tion of Cruelty to Animals to accuse them otherwise. This may be so in Wellington, but ia it so in country districts? Some years ago tho Wanganui society had to apply to- the Government ,to seo if they could not get a little assistance: from the police, more so in country districts. The result Was a reply from. the late Mr. Seddon, thon Premier, that .the police all over Now, Zealand had got.'instructions to prosecute wherever they found a-.case of. cruelty. -With what result havo those instructions been carried out. Even in small country districts, where to all appearunco they havo nothing to do, and whero cruelty is most glaring, I never knew , ono instance of tho police taking up a case—unless some one went and laid an information.: One sometimes wonders what they aro for--or what the Police Offences Act is for, if not carricd out. —I am, etc., COUNTRY LOON. June 5. ■
